We didn't play badly yesterday - and we controlled the game against a good Swansea side who set up to play on the counter. They have some good attackers but apart from a few glimpses in the 1st half we controlled them. Unfortunately for us they sat very deep and defended well - it didn't really make a difference when Shelvey went off as they were already so deep. They played well, we played better but in the end we couldn't break through. It's frustrating but not many teams will stop us scoring this season. Mirallas was the biggest miss yesterday - his pace would've forced them to come out and man mark him - meaning there'd have been more gaps to exploit.

Onto Lille now - we need a big performance and more importantly a win. Wolfsburg are flying ATM and we'll be hard pushed to go over there and get a result. Need all three points on Thursday.

Maybe I was exaggerating - but Baines' delivery was poor especially from corners. Barkley started to slow down especially after the 40 minute mark but he's making those runs from midfield and linking up defence and midfield in a way that we really missed in his absence and with Mirallas out.

Agree that his corners were poor but that's nothing new lately, don't understand why he can't beat the first man all of a sudden.

Eh? Standard feature of our corners for yonks. Tippy tappy, round the back finally, cutback, cleared for a corner, Goodison gets all excited. Baines swings it over, onto the head of the first defender, cleared downfield for a chance to the opposition... From all the corners we had yesterday, I can recall one that was half decent

He whips in some great corners for England though, can't understand it.

I know mate. Can't fathom completely what we're doing wrong either. Not much pace on the cross and low aggression / positioning from the blues in the box? Defenders are sussing them every time. We'd be as well putting the corner into touch and getting everyone back into position ffs

Glad Roberto hit the nail on the head post match. He knew we were too slow in the final third today and he'll be straight back onto the training ground with that one. We controlled the game from start to finish really and I was never worried about them scoring, but then I was never convinced we were going to score either. Our day summed up by Baines' set pieces. Ah well, onto the next one.

I honestly think we didn't play that bad yesterday. We didn't really do that much wrong. Swansea came and set out to defend; I can't recall more than four of their players being in our half at any given time in the first half, and to their credit, they defended excellently. In a situation where the opposing team is defending from open play exceptionally well, you need one of two things: a good set piece (which regardless of the dire corners would never have happened because not a single blue shirt challenged Ashley Williams) or a bit of creativity, which other than Mirallas, not many of our players have that sort of spark about them.

I'd also just like to say how gutted I am for Duffy. Stuck on the subs bench at Blackburn and if he had waited two more months he'd be starting in Europe. Poor lad. Need another defender in January without a doubt.

...delivery is poor but so is the movement and tactics. Look at Skyrtel's near miss from a corner against Newcastle yesterday and check out Lovren blocking out the marker to leave Skyrtel a free run. We don't appear to have any strategy, surely it's worked on in training.

mcgeady takes a better corner than baines, he just does not get the big clap because he is not a scouser.

barkley takes the worst fresh air shot I ever saw and gets clapped by the crowd.

We have our faves, dont we.
