One of the many attractions of football is surely the expectation in the full knowledge that it is hugely optimistic and improbable :) ?

Well, Baines has his value, which we now know is around 20m.

Then we factor January in, which is an awful time to sell your best player, so another 5m for the inconvenience.

Then we take his no doubt excellent form into account and it raises his initial prices by another few million.

Then we realise that Moyes is a [Poor language removed] so add another few.

30m take it or leave it Davey.

What's that, it's not good value? Then do one.

Opportunity knocks!

Arsenal - probably exceeding expectations, genuine contenders for Champions
Liverpool - exceeding expectations, likely contenders for top 4
Tottenham - looking good so far, but usually flatter to deceive
Chelsea - "the special one V2" not convincing - neither the manager nor the team, top 4 not a given
Man City - away form suggests CL qualification questionable
Man United - jury out, usual Moyes slow start or totally out of his depth?
Everton - recent history of "punching above weight" - this year far "heavier" in terms of squad strength and with a manager far more willing to give it a go.

My prediction for top positions next May:

Arsenal
Tottenham
Everton
Chelsea
Liverpool
Man City
Man United

Too frightened after years of cntery at GP to agree - do hope you're right tho.

Thanks - but after years of Moyes-like caution, I am throwing that to the wind in terms of expectation - in all areas of life but football I am an optimist - it's time to be optimistic about the Blues and Martinez. It's his first season, and on the evidence to date, there's cause for optimism.

GO FOR IT!!!!!

I'm loving the Twitter exchange between Tim Cahill and Phil Neville.

Neville tweeted Cahill to say Everton now have a decent number 17. Cahill tweeted him back telling him to get his notebook out.

First half absolutely beautiful football. The chemistry between Lukaku, Barkley and Mirallas and improving form of McCarthy (he's going to be really good for us I'm now even more convinced). Newcastle were unbalanced in midfield and lacking creativity and once Coleman had Ben Arfa's number they offered practically zero threat.

For me we sowed the seeds of that second half when Mirallas took that wee knock just before halftime. Some folk said he signalled to come off and we started the second half with him I think, attempting to jog it off at centre forward with Lukaku on the wing. Lukaku did do a bit of running in that time even making a challenge or two in the RB position but he also started to look more tired quicker and lost possession with one clumsy attempt to beat his man which screamed tiring legs.

Their changes to midfield and getting the early goal gave them confidence and while we didn't go to pieces we didn't play well enough to assert ourselves in what became too open a game.

Anyway table says we're unbeaten in fourth and we've had more than wee glimpses of possible awesomeness this team could be capable of.

Thoughts on the game:

-Coleman was the man of the match. Fantastic defensively and got forward and linked up really well. He definitely needs to be matched up with Mirrelas or Dela in front of him so the attack can come from overlapping runs and pace.

-Baines really misses Pienaar. Our options on the wing with him out just makes the left side tick a little bit off. While I have been upset to see Osman in the starting 11, he wasn't bad tonight since there was a lot less opportunity for someone to run right around him into the heart of our defense.

-Lukaku was very good and it is so nice having an actual striker, especially one who can hold up the ball. Besides his assist I was not impressed with his passing and in the second half there were a lot of turnovers he was responsible for.

-Barkley had a very good game. Not completely dominant but he seemed to play within himself more than the chelsea match. Hopefully with Lukaku he wont feel the need to have to do everything on his own. The one thing that he really needs to add to his bag of tricks is perfecting the through ball. When he has the ball at his feet going full speed, defenders are backpedalling or hacking him. Unfortunately he seems to do this with his head down and still has not taken advantage of his passing options when he is driving down the middle. Hopefully his chemeistry with Lukaku will develop and he can be setting 17 and 11 through and behind the back lines.

McCarthy- Really good game. This is the type of match that was promised when we bought him. Excellent work rate and pretty tidy on the ball. He doesn't seem to be the one to stand up and stop a player one on one (that's what Barry is for) but he always keeps the defender in front of him and he disrupts their attacks by forcing them to turn back and letting our defense get its shape. I think we have our starting middle pair (with Gibson spelling every now and then)

Mirallas- I read he picked up a knock so maybe there was a reason but I thought he should have come off at 50'. He was not doing much offensively and wasnt getting back at all. I was very frustrated seing Lukaku pick up the ball or defending right next to Coleman. (Glad to see he is willing to track back and cover) but he should never be constantly forced into that position, because Mirallas was walking around back at the other end.

Dela- He was on for about 10 minutes created two great chances and showed skill and speed to burn. I really want to get him a start with the full 11. Either on the wing or maybe Spell Baarkley if we have an easier match coming up.
