Howard
Coleman Jagielka Distin Baines
Gibson Barry
Mirallas Barkley Deuleofeu
Lukaku

Wouldn't mind seeing this starting line up, Deuleofeu replaced shortly after half time though to stop the lad getting complacent! and McCarthy for Gibson, depending on fitness!

I am with you on this but would have McCarthy starting for Gibson. Apart from that, that side would trouble any team in the league.

All things being equal we should come first tonight -
BUT : 1)Newcastle lost at home to Hull last week -
2)We are the only unbeaten side in the league in a season of upsets -
3)Moyes at last managed to get Everton above United after just 5 games in charge of United -
Got a feeling we are going to be up against the officials tonight -
we will have to score the goals from open play and be very careful in our third for giving away free kicks and penalties -
hope Martinez chooses the best available starting 11 for a change -
Everton needs this win - some tough fixtures coming up

There's far too much optimism & large win predictions on here for my liking.....experience tells me that this is always the pre-emptor for disappointment for an Evertonian......

Looking forward to the game though, the first big night game of the season, COYB!!!!

I think we'll find out a lot about Roberto Martinez's Everton tonight.

Whether we'll have the guts and the vision to actually go for the win, or whether we meekly go out and think that a point is a good result.

Can't imagine anyone would be thinking that mate, it's a home game against an entirely average side. No question we'll be going for the win

I don't think there's a doubt that we'll go for the win, the question is whether we're good enough to break down a side who'll come intent on settling for a point & maybe hoping to catch us on the counter.

Will we have enough pace in our passing & movement in the last 3rd to get in behind them, or will we simply knock the ball around in front of a set back line?

I've just stuck 2 quid on Barkley last goalscorer on Paddypower at 12-1 because of your dream. I'm listening to people who have dreams after yesterday. I was taking the wife to Whitby for a day out and driving on the North Yorks Moors when the wife said " Slow down, I dreamt we got a speeding ticket last night " So I slowed down to the speed limit of 60 and a few miles down the road a police van was set up, the ones that can spot you from 2k away. Well played to my witch wife, I will cry a few tears when I burn her for being a witch.

I've backed Everton to win, over 11 corners and card index over 40 points at 8-1 as well.

This sounds like you're getting your excuses in for when the police find her ashes under the patio:)

The greatest enemy of Everton in recent years has been expectation.

Expectation that we're going to win.

Expectation that we're simply too good for the opposition.

Expectation that this is our season.

For many, many years, we've struggled to deal with people expecting us to do well. We're rather good at flying under the radar, quietly getting the results. Now, once again, the spotlight is on us, and we are expected to win tonight.

I, for one, don't consider this a home banker. Do I think we should win? You're damn right I do. But thinking the likes of Ben Arfa (easily one of the best players in the league on his day) won't cause us problems is very dangerous. Hopefully Baines, Coleman et al will relentlessly get at them so that the quality of players like Ben Arfa won't matter.

Tonight is a test of whether we can deal with the pressure of favourites in a game against a side who are wildly inconsistent, but have the ability to cause problems. Tonight is a test of whether we might just do something this year.

On a separate note, this fixture consistently produces goals. This probably explains why Sky have a fetish for showing at least 1 of the 2 fixtures what feels like every single year.

I just wonder whether Martinez will start Kone and have Lukaku on the bench tonight. It might well be he's drawn the conclusion on the evidence of the past two games that Steve Clarke had a point bringing him on last 30-40 minutes against a tiring opposition.

One thing you can be sure of: there's not going to be any reverse gears used (especially at home) under Martinez. We'll keep on looking to get forward. There'll be no hanging on for a point or defending a one goal lead.

As you say, they have players who can easily get on the scoresheet. We have to accept that challenge and not cower away from it. We have better quality in almost all positions and I expect that to tell in the result.
