Will we ever know if Garbutt is up to it unless he gets a run?Guy is 24 now and either needs a chance or look to leave in the summer. Sam is too wedded to experience even if it's the experience' of Martina being dire even at right back let alone left.

I think he'll get another one, but just my gut feeling. He just needs to go somewhere else and prove he can coach men.

I don't think he'll get another chance at being 1st team manager for us because, he was hung out to dry and unless he does go somewhere else and proves his worth, U-23 is his role.

Well that was the most enjoyable Everton game I've watched since the Cyprus away game.

Portsmouth were clearly a couple of levels below us but the lads made that show on the pitch which doesn't always happen.

Feeney & Gibson were impressive at the back. As well as being good defenders you can tell they are both ballers.

Garbutt did well and would bring much needed balance to the first team pending Baines' return (assuming we don't buy somebody).

Hornby also looks the part. He stands out at U18 level due to his size, but he's shown there's a lot more to his game than that. Very composed in front of goal but we saw a different side to his game tonight as he turned provider. Lost count of how many chances he created.

Bene is steadily becoming my favourite Everton young player out of all of them. He just oozes class and ran the show tonight. I'd have him in the first team now. NEA.

Evans was star of the show tonight though. Two years ago, out of all our youngsters, I predicted that Evans and Baningime had the best chance to make it at Everton. At one stage I thought I got it wrong with Evans, and I heard he'd had a few growth issues. But he showed tonight he's back on line. Apart from his skill and ability with both feet, he's got this fantastic football brain. You could see it in the positions between the lines he was taking up in the second half especially. Has a goal in him too. It helps having somebody as good as Bene behind him who can pick him out. He's filled out a lot since I last saw him.

Special mention for Jags. I think we've found a new position for our captain. Behind the microphone.;)

..worth remembering that Lewis Gibson is still only 17, so his performances at this level look particularly good given his age. He’s able to cope physically, mentally and looks very assured. I suspect if we could push time forward 12 months, we’d have a solution to our LB problem

Fraser Hornby only turned 18 in September, he’s massive but I presume his growing might not have finished. I think the club are being careful with his development.

A great read. Thought Evans came into it a bit more in the second half when he drifted inside into the space and played some lovely quick balls through the middle. All in all Beni is a must for the first team now, as you say. Thought Broadhead looked quite good the first half and is a real prospect.

After watching the U23s last night, it gave me more hope that with the right managerial team in place a lot of these youngster can progress to the first team. That said it will be interesting to watch them play against a stronger team and see what impact they have.

Only the second time I've watched Gibson and was really impresssed by his all round game. But especially his composure in possession. Dont think I saw him give the ball away which was excellent given the majority were forward passes into feet.

Not seen him at LB but I'm sure he:d be equally as composed thete.

Never mind then... :o :(

It’s a shame we don’t stream all under 23 matches. I’d be happy to pay a small subscription fee to follow them home and away. Was great that the club used the YouTube channel last night and Jags commentated.

I put this on the Seamus thread, but this is actually a more appropriate place to put it, but I really didn't enjoy Jags' commentary:

Anyone else notice how negative Jagielka was about the first team on commentary? Obviously it would be weird if he was saying everything's great, we're gonna rocket up the table, etc, but good grief! Every comment about the first team was from the Moyes school of playing down expectations and plucky little Everton. He seemed frustrated but one comment in particular stuck out for its negativity when he said something to the effect of "well it's one point more for us and denies West Brom [SECOND BOTTOM, MANAGED BY PARDEW, USELESS WEST BROM] from getting three points."

I can't work out if this is ingrained in Jags from the Moyes era or Big Sam's relegation fight material, but it was bloody depressing to hear.

..i’m equally impressed, Fred. He’s not flashy which often means a player goes under the radar but he’s very effective. Some of those Forward passes were from interceptions where he read the pass being played into the player he was marking. He’s not particularly tall but he’s very solid. Left CBs are a premium, but size might ultimately determine where he plays.

He’s certainly one to keep an eye on given he’s only 18 in the summer.

Found that bizarre myself but its the mentality in our club at present. I don't think that comment would come out of Seamus' mouth
