I don't even know if Holgate's much quicker than Mina you know. He's more mobile, 'nimbler' if you like, but I'm not sure he's actually much quicker once they get going.

There was a training clip posted last year i think...Holgate looked really, really, really fast.

Id say Godfrey / Holgate would compete for one spot if a back 4 (with the other on the bench able to cover all 4 positions) and then Branthwaite in a year or two with one of Keane/Mina/New signing competing with him.

In a back 3 we'd need all 5.

I'm just saying we've shown zero indications of trying to be a pressing side. I don't know why people think this manager is suddenly going to do it a couple of years into his spell.
I think you have to go with the tools you’ve got.
we looked like we couldn’t keep a clean sheet early on in the season. And he goes to 4CB’s also down to losing Coleman & Digne, but all of a sudden we look harder to break down and he’s still played them 4 at times even With the full backs, back fit.

I think he will play them 4 tonight and Saturday.
but long term he’s not going to keep playing 4CB’s. With a quality RB and
Keeper and maybe Gbamin back, playing the holding role, he won’t need to,
Horses for courses as they say.

Godfrey & Holgate have pace, but one is new to the club and the other missed the start of the season. We know we have to play deep with Keane & Mina. Im
Just not convinced Carlo will want that moving forward, he’s had one window.

And I don’t think a low block team will compete at the top end of the table. Ok so City will always have 60% possession. Liverpool/Utd/Chelsea maybe 55%

But you can’t be playing the likes of Leeds, Leicester and Southampton and giving them over 60% possession. We will get nowhere.
just my opinion,
We will what see what Carlo’s is over the next year or two

Fwiw Ancelotti has never been a massive pressing manager. He might not always play this deep but we won't be City or Leeds any time soon. I doubt we bring in a CB this window. Fix the midfield and get a real RB first.

Also, most clubs Ancelotti has managed have actually played without a deep defence...hes flexible.

We do actually want to play higher - Carlo has said that. We're just currently incapable of it.

That doesn't mean we need another CB, though. Just means we play one of Mina/Keane with one of the other one.

For me thats Godfrey + Mina. Seem to fit well together...i also cant imagine Keane playing high even if next to Godfrey. Its not his game at all.

I do think he would like other options like a 3 at the back but we dont have the players for that.

You don’t have to be a pressing team, to actually play a bit higher up the pitch and have more possession

Godfrey and Mina would be mine too if we're gonna play that high line. Holgate at right-back (because he's more athletic than Coleman).

Changing the subject, if the press are to be believed then Everton are likely to be in the money come the summer, for various reasons some players will be on the move. Kean, Kenny, James, Bernard, Tosun all linked with moves away, and of course some players contracts coming to an end.

We won't be selling James - that's nonsense (know you only said there's been links). The rest probably all will go, and yes we are going to be able to hopefully spend that and then some this summer.

Its not me saying about James, he is quoted into todays press as saying he does not like the physicality in the premiere league, causing him injuries and he does not like the weather in England

Holgate is a terrible fullback though. So for me you swap him and Godfrey. But the problem of course is Keane is easily our most consistent CB so setting up in a way that drops him isn't smart imo.

For me the biggest obstacle to playing higher up is we don't win the ball in midfield enough so the backline gets repeatedly exposed. Pace or not that's hard to deal with.

I don't think Godfrey looks very good at right-back either, though.

When he plays 'left-back', he pretty much plays tucked in really narrow anyway as like an extra CB.

We need a RB. It's stupid that we don't have one in already. And this is actually on Brands, because he's had 3 years.

Tbh I'd switch them I'd have Godfrey at fullback and Holgate with Mina because I think Godfrey effects the game far more at fullback and I don't think Holgate is a very good fullback.
