Having seen most of the two games:

Barkley - defensive midfield. Positives: calm on ball, often plays tidy sensible ball, gets forward well, can play good through ball, eye for goal. Negatives: haven't seen a game where defensive qualities are needed, sometimes runs into trouble, sometimes lack of concentration with distribution (but he's young)
Garbutt - left back. Positives: good attacking play, seems relatively quick and aware of where other attackers and his team-mates are, can cross well, calm. Negatives: same as Barkley

Be interesting to see them up against Turkey.

Didn't see the game , but all that sounds like experience and their "tactical education" ...

Had this debate previously. How can you actually "teach" attacking play???? I'd say you can't really, you just get in the box. Maybe you teach movement but not actually the ability to "attack" that's taught from a young age with the basics of the game.

Defending is different because you do it as a group.... positioning and decision making etc.

But sounds good.

Shame no Bidwell either though.

One of the things I've been most impressed with watching those games is how much the U17's play like the "good" Everton (e.g. keep the ball moving, give the passer options, give and go, etc.) rather than the "bad" Everton (hoof the ball up, win it in the air, fight for the knock-downs).

Like I said, our two haven't had to show much in defence so far, so the next teams (Turkey and whoever they get in the semifinals) might be a better test of where they are. RS looked to have a good centre back (Wisdom), as well.

Yeah but the good Everton passed Man U off the park etc.

I think as the quality of the (Everton) team's been increasing so has the football. No one can possibly call Everton a hoof ball team.... you gotta mix it up abit but Everton certainly pass it round

Barkley, like any other talented youngster who is quick on his feet and with his head, but does not have the stamina or constitution to be an attacker or defender, is played as a box-to-box midfielder. Since he is still growing (and I like the fact that he was among the tallest players on the pitch - apparently he's had a growth spurt), it's too early to say what his position will be. The position he plays for England is generally not the one he's taken in the academy/reserves games, where he's been used anywhere from DM to the fantasista to the wings. My suspicion is that he might end up on the flanks, at least at the start of his involvement with the first team. I've seen and read enough to be certain that barring an injury* he will have involvement with the first team.

Note: This is 99% based on match reports on the OS and the footage from the Milk Cup and the FA Youth Cup. I've never seen him play 90 minutes in an Everton shirt.

*or being poached by another team - does anybody know if he's been confirmed as a first year scholar for next year?

When this game is scheduled ?
I think it's time to watch both of them for me too...

Barkley now comes in for last 15 minutes.

Ooooo, and there's Garbutt too - for last 10 minutes. Nice.

Edit: Seconds after coming in, Garbutt put a great cross into te box, but England's CF didn't head the ball properly, with Barkley confusing him a little bit with his movement. Garbutt's playing as left midfielder, he was brought in as a defensive sub, to offer more cover on left side.

Edit2: Another great cross by Garbutt, this time England's CF couldn't control the ball... Polish announcers praising Garbutt already.

Edit3: Great chance for Garbutt to score, but he was a little bit too slow with his shooting decision and defender made a last second block.

Edit 4: Game over, England wins 2:1 and will play against France in the semis. Should be very interesting game. Both our players had a good cameo today - Garbutt was very active in his short stint as left midfielder and Barkley was playing very deep, with England protecting a lead, but showed good awareness and IQ with some decisions he made in centre of the pitch.

Watched the game yesterday - basically England won because Wickham finally showed he could finish well and the French didn't.

Our lads weren't particularly impressive.

Garbutt got skinned a couple of times although to be fair in any match he's had little help from the left midfielder in front of him. When he did come forward he put over some good crosses.

Similarly, Barkley looked threatening a couple of times moving up the field into attack, where he seems more comfortable in a kind of Cahill role. He nicked the ball a couple of times, but equally had it taken off him a few. He appeared to be tired, to be honest.

Weren't the best players, but weren't the worst by a long way. Equally the game wasn't the best but they did enough. I could see their defense getting ripped apart by a good and quick attacking side (Spain?).

Spain-England is going on right now, plenty of streams available. Both Barkley and Garbutt are of course playing. Very good game so far.
Very tough task for Garbutt today - future Barcelona star Gerard Deulofeu is right winger for Spain.

Edit1: Barkley just almost pulled off an own goal, but England's goalkeeper made a shocking save.

Edit2: 1:0 for Spain, Own goal by central defender (but it's difficult to blame him), great play by Gerard, who after switching sides easily beat England's RB.

Edit3: Garbutt was just skinned twice in one play by other one of Spanish wingers, he will have a serious headache after this one.

Edit4: Mr Own Goal now equalized after a header from the corner. 1:1.
