Keane has always struggled when asked to play with space behind him. He is at his best defending a small area (eg Ancelotti’s low block). He is also very much a confidence player. When his confidence slips his form suffers and he shrinks from leadership. When he is feeling good he steps up and takes responsibility. Right now his confidence is low and the shape (and changes in shape) is increasing his self-doubt. Right now is a liability. He more than most would benefit from a hung-ho Butcher/Gough/Terry type leader next to him.
