West Ham supporters sing homophobic chants towards Chelsea fans

Kick It Out have urged supporters to report instances heard at Stamford Bridge on Saturday

West Ham supporters were heard consistently singing homophobic chants towards Chelsea supporters in their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“Chelsea rent boys” could be heard clearly throughout Saturday’s game, which has seen football’s anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out urge supporters to report instances of homophobic chants.

The chants come on the week of the Rainbow Laces Day campaign, designed to promote LGBT+ inclusion in the sport.

Kick It Out tweeted: “If you were at the Chelsea vs West Ham game and heard homophobic chanting please directly report it to @KickItOutReport.”

It is the latest example of Chelsea fans having homophobic chants directed at them, with Kick It Out previously calling for action after Liverpool supporters were also heard singing “Chelsea rent boys” last April

“We are absolutely clear: the ‘rent boy’ chant is homophobic and must be treated as such,” read their statement at the time.

“The ‘rent boy’ chants have been directed at Chelsea for years, with little action taken by The FA or police – and that must not continue.

“We expect stronger condemnation and appropriate sanctions. just as we would for any other form of discrimination.”

In a statement, West Ham said: “West Ham United in no way condones any behaviour that falls short of the highest standards which the Club sets when it comes to equality.

Worlds gone mad. What a joke. So they can feed scousers, pay our benefits etc etc and yet rent boys is now meant as an issue. World needs to get a grip

Check your privileges gaffa, them Chelsea fans were born that way. You chose to be in a struggling working class environment.

The intent was most definitely “You lot are paid for sex by men” anybody who claims other wise is deluded.

Well I'm deluded then.

Obviously it depends how old you and whether you remember how it started, and anyone under the age of 40 probably doesn't have a clue, so thinks the same as you. The origin of the chant is as per ...

Back in the 80's the Chelsea Aggros had a chant to much the same tune. I'm not sure if it's true or an urban myth, but one of their gang was raided by plod and was found in bed with a local rent boy. Hence the chant.

So it started from the idea that Chelsea hooligans used rent boys rather than being rent boys.

In the 70’s all chants would have been banned
The world has gone mad

Most of them should have been. In those days, however, the authorities were just as blindly bigoted as the average fan on the terrace. Has the world moved on? Quite a bit, though judging by the lack of insight of some of the posts on this thread, more clearly needs to be done.

The chant is offensive, I'm not denying that.

I do personally however take offence to the chants from Chelsea fans mocking us about unemployment, lack of food, and having our benefits paid for us.

I absolutely despise that horrible tory club.
