Still proud as hell of our club today for this amazing gesture.....

One thing about this I was thinking about today.....was, the medical profession in America (and elsewhere too probably) should be ashamed of themselves.....I read there that the £700,000 only covers the cost of the anti-body of his treatment, nothing else......how can the treatment (for something that mostly effects kids of 5 years and younger cost this amount of money????!!!!!!!......it's just sounds obscene to me that certain people are grossly profiting from such horrible misfortune of others....
Welcome to the seedy slimeball world of life saving medicine.
One of the worlds greatest embarrassments. Harvesting vast multi billion dollar fortunes on the back of those most needy.

Parasites look up to them.

Whilst I generally agree that this should be funded by public funds, you can't exactly blame the doctors or R&D companies for charging this. For an operation to cost that much and only be available in New York suggests it's pretty cutting edge. Which means loads of people have been hard at work developing it, testing it, validating it, getting it approved, learning it, etc.

You can't expect them to work for free, I'm afraid. (But the gov't should subsidize this R&D so the cost doesn't fall on patients).

That said, this is brilliant by the club in every aspect. So glad to be an Evertonian today...it feels good to support a club that actually cares about humans.

In all fairness, do you have any idea how much that treatment would cost the NHS to provide? Just because it's free at the point of use here doesn't mean the doctors and nurses work for free, or that the medicines are supplied at no charge. It takes years of research to come up with treatments for some of these horrible conditions, and the relevant people have to have years or training and education before they're even able to carry out effective research. It's just not plausible to expect this process to incur zero expense.

I disagree.

Absolutely this. I'd love it if there was a charity or cause close to the Evertonians hearts that we could support once Bradley raises enough to cover the flights, accommodation and so forth. What the club did was amazing but the fans have also been class, their fanzines were tweeting about him, the fans were chipping in to the buckets, they all joined in the applause. Really feel that once this is done we should do something to show our appreciation, including at the return game. They've literally helped one of our own have a chance of the life he deserves, you really can't overstate the importance and significance of that and it won't ever be forgotten on Wearside. If they need help with anything I'm sure all of the SMB will get behind them

They really do come across as decent folk, and hopefully they will kick the RS to pieces for us at some point. That would be all the thanks I would ever ask for.

I wasn't saying it should be free....but £700,000?!!!!........and end of the day, the goal of this research and service shouldn't be to make profits, it should be to save kids lives....the medical service and researchers all make enough money as it is without further profiting from stuff like this.....

I agree, very decent folk - and yeah if they can pan LFC for us we'd take that! Moyes' record vs the RS though...[shudder]

I read a few Sunderland posters wanting to give something back, and was thinking we could let them know about EitC because if they genuinely feel they need to give something back who's to stop them - but then they have already given so much for Bradley I wouldn't expect them to be forking out anything else for other causes... plus you don't give to causes like this because you expect anything back. You can see how touched they are by the gesture and our fans' efforts last night; it's obvious in all the feedback today. I just wish the lad well.

It'll be cause it's so rare that it's a specialty thing
There really isnt a lot of profit to be had from r&d in the pharma industry because trials are so expensive to run and drugs may not be viable - each successful one generally has to recoup its own costs plus a number of failed ones

Theres viable targets in this area but this isn't one; despite how it looks

I've always had a soft spot for SAFC and their supporters and I think they deserve huge credit for the way they've supported Bradley and his family. If it weren't for their championing of his cause the lad's plight wouldn't have come to the attention of EFC or the wider footballing world. Huge kudos to whoever it was at our club who sanctioned the £200k and to all my fellow blues who've chipped in with donations as well.

I just hope we get to see this brave little boy being feted and applauded at Goodison in the return fixture, that the treatment in the New Year achieves everything his parents hoped for & more. When he grows up we should definitely be his second team. ;)

I'm not defending private healthcare, but the research and development that goes into these drugs costs tens of millions of pounds. Obviously in the states a lot of people have insurance against this kind of thing, whilst over here we have the NHS. The difficulty comes when you have to travel from here to the US, then unfortunately you have to pay and it's hugely expensive. I don't know if anyone remembers the case of the parents who "kidnapped" their own child to take him abroad for treatment?
