Everton 'B' Team

What happens to the teams relegated and promoted to the Premiership each year?

Do the relegated (from the Premiership) teams lose their B team place in the B League?

Do the Championship teams have to run a B team and have B team infrastructure just in case they win promotion to the Premiership?

It is an absolutely TERRIBLE idea, so fundamentally flawed that not only will it hopefully never happen, but will probably see Greg Dyke out of a job.

- So they're going to create a League 3, between League 2 and the Conference, and they're going to dump a load of Prem B teams in there.
- And these teams can get promoted all the way up to League 1, at which point they can't go any further.
- So what happens when all the Prem B teams take up the first 6 or 7 places in League 1? None of them can go up. Then what teams get promoted? The 7th, 8th, 9th placed teams? Where do the play off places extend to, 12th, 13th?
- So then you'll get crap teams getting promoted into the Championship, who will then come straight back down.
- So it will be incredibly hard for any team to go from the Conference/League 2 to the Championship in future.

- And how does U-21 players playing in the 4th tier of English football help develop them for the England team?

There are so many flaws in this idea it is utterly ridiculous.

They should just have a properly organised Reserves league and be done with it.

Steve Claridge on 5 Live now, very good...

He is quite passionate!

No one has mentioned if they go into the Cups either. Or if first teamers could play for the B team in a one off game.

Its well intentioned, but so unfair on the lower league clubs.

Here in Spain the 1st and B teams can not play in the same league. So if eg Cardiff are relegated from the Prem(clever that eh!) so are their B side from the Championship (if they are that high) if they are in a lower division nothing happens, plus the B team can't enter cup comps

I don't see the whole point in it. What difference would it make as the young lads can just been sent out on loan now anyway to get first team football. I actually think it would make it worse, as some of the lads may not yet be up to the level that the teams B team is at, for instance look at some of our younger players out on loan, Shane Duffy is probably at his current level of ability playing in the Championship so we sent him there. However players who are further behind in their development such as Kennedy and Pennington aren't good enough to play Championship football so we have sent them to get League One experience and we can see next season if they are ready to make the step up.

Another disadvantage is that it would just encourage the Premier League clubs to just steal all the youngsters from the lower leagues who show a hint of potential and just throw them in the B team. I know this happens now but I think it would get worse as the teams could now offer professional football instead of sitting in the U21's. This would do the lower league teams out of a lot of money as more of their 'promising' players will get snapped up at a younger age before they are given a chance to develop.

Also who says the top teams can't just go and buy a bunch of Spanish, French and German youngsters just to fill the squad out, as there is nothing stopping them and if they get them when they are 16/17 they will count as homegrown players by the time they are 21 so it would still meet the homegrown quota in the first team, which wouldn't help the national team in anyway what so ever.

The only thing that will improve the national team is getting more English players playing in the Premier League for the top sides and the only way to do this is to limit the amount of foreign players, I know they already have a certain amount of players that have to be homegrown already but they have to increase this and they should also implement a rule that teams need to start a certain amount of English players each game.

Thanks - I understand they can't be in the same division for obvious reasons, my point was more that in the case of for example, Fulham being relegated this year what happens to their B team in Division 3? Is it replaced by one of the promoted teams, Burnley for example.

If so how does that work and what benefits does it offer? For a club yo-yoing between the Premiership and the Championship their B team would have no continuity, yet clearly the B team would have to make way for the B team of the newly promoted Premiership club...

As opposed to what country ?

Most European leagues.

No other country in Europe has the lower league system we do, that is so heavily attended.

There were League 2 teams this past season getting crowds of 10,000+ for games.

You'd be talking 100s attending 4th tier Spanish league games.

Whats attendance got to do with it though ?

This changes are aimed at making football better at the highest level, it's not about attendances in league 2. I'd say you've got a better chance of getting to the top in a country like Germany than you have in a country like England, which is reflected in the number of German nationals who play in the top leagues worldwide compared to English players.
