We played 4-1-4-1 didn't we? Heitinga sitting in front of Jagielka and Distin. Coleman and Baines as left/right backs. This formation shows that Martinez kan shake things up depending on our opponents. Think he had Ronaldo in mind.

Calling me a kopite mate?

Rodney Marsh says Everton will be in for a long Premier League season if they don't sort out their defensive tactics.

The former QPR star watched the Toffees lose 2-1 to Real Madrid in America and pinpointed where their difficulties lie.

He told Transfer Tavern: "They played a high back line. All of them were pushed up to the half-way line without pressuring the ball. When you play that way and you play against Real Madrid, who have got the quickest player in football in Cristiano Ronaldo, that's a suicide tactic.

"If they play that way in the Premier League next year under Martinez I can see them being on the end of a few bad results."

Yet we won't be playing Ronaldo every week though will we?

Stupid old blert.

He's right about the high line tactic though isn't he? considering who we were playing against.

Yes he was. We played a high line. So what? It's in a pre-season friendly.

But it's the fact that he said absolutely nothing positive about our performance in the space of 5 minutes.

He said he watched it, I'm guessing he didn't watch the 2nd half at all then.

Based on what mate? Having an opinion that differs from yours doesn't make me a kopite so, implied or otherwise, I'm asking you to turn it in. I haven't resorted to name calling or winding people up on here once mate so see no reason why people feel the need to do that sort of thing. If you disagree, that's fine to say so but very few people have put together an argument past 'he's ****' or 'you're a kopite'.

Far from it mate and you're basing it on sweet F.A, so enough is enough lad.

I would love it if Everton played Celtic in pre-season actually

We could all sing Grand Old Team together

I wasn't paying much attention and I don't know the era - think it was ancient - but there was footage of a Celtic match on the telly the other day and they were singing YNWA. I think it was a league match and I'm certain that it was Celtic supporters singing it.

Yes Celtic do on occasions sing YAWN.

'Kinnel i'm still tired from watching this now.

Not sure if i've given my views on us yet.

We were surprisingly decent I thought. This was Real Madrid we were playing not effing Hull City remember.

First half that high line played right into their tactics which was a bit retarded, but I was impressed with the way Martinez sorted it in the second half. Saw the problem, then fixed it. Good that. Just see the probkem before the games starts next time hey. We may have coped with them better had Gibson been playing from the start and controlling things like he does.

The only player who didn't show any promise was Kone. But i'm not gonna be nasty about him. It's way way too early. And who really cares if he wasn't great? If he slots against Norwich nobody will remember this.
Jelavic was still falling over like Bambi on ice, but was in the right place to slot. And I guess that's what matters.
Mirallas is really going to shaft some teams this season. We do nned to show patience with him though, as sometimes his dribbles and tricks won't come off. But when they do we are in for more treats!
Fellaini played well I thought. He's defo not getting forward as much in the pre season games, and that's probably a good thing I think.
Baines and Coleman are boss.
Osman is Osman.
Howard played well I thought.
Heitinga I just don't see the point in him anymore.
Jag and Distin obviously stretched first half, but still super comitted to the game.

Oh and that 5 seconds bit of bossness from 'The Barca Kid' gave me a semi.

All in all really happy with that run out. I'd imagine he will tinker with the team a lot for the next game.

didn't watch this live and just got chance, I hoped, to watch highlights on official site. seems to be saying though that you still need to buy the game for original price even to watch highlights. has this been true of all pre-season games or do we get to see them eventually

I think, since the introduction of ppv(as opposed to having to pay and subscribe to watch anything on Everton TV), they've been exclusive mate iirc
