We have to aim for European football.

This.

We have squad depth to compete on both fronts now i think.

14/15 Euro campaign midfield: Barkley, Barry, Besic, McCarthy, McGeady, Gibson, Mirallas, Osman, Pienaar, Deulofeu
16/17 current midfield: Schneiderlin, Barkley, Mirallas, Lennon, Bolasie, McCarthy, Gueye, Barry, Besic, Davies and Lookman(With Deulofeu and Cleverley on loan).

I'd expect a few changes to that list come Summer, but the quality of the depth is there. I'd only expect that to get better.

Europe and a push for Top 4, why not eh?

But it won't happen again Dan, that's what I am trying to say.

That gateway to Europe has been closed.....a team will no longer be sent to Europe merely because they were beaten in the F.A. Cup Final by a team which qualified for the CL.

They have done away with that rule :)

If Boro, for example, are beaten in the Final by Chelsea they will not be going into the EL ;)

With City winning tonight then, am I right in assuming that if City, Arsenal and Spurs progress to the semi's then 7th will be in the Europa League qualifiers? The other match is Chelsea v Man United who will both be in the top 6 which will means all 4 Semi Finalists will be in the top 6.

Does that guarantee 7th a place?

Yes

Thanks.

Apologies if this has been covered as I haven't read every page but this from last season claims 8th place could get a spot:

I don't think that is right. I was under the impression if any of our representatives in European Competitions won one, then they would be upgraded, but there would never be more than 7 English teams in Europe the following season.

E.g Man United win the Europa League this season but finish outside the top 4. I would have thought that they would get a CL place, and so would the top 4 teams. That would mean there would be 5 in the CL and just 2 in the Europa League. If say City finished 5th, United 6th, and both won the European Competitions they are in, again I assume they would limit English clubs to 5 CL places then, and only give us 2 Europa League places.

I also think West Brom are a realistic threat to us getting 7th. I expect them to beat Palace and us to lose to Spurs which would reduce the gap to 1, and it will be a tough game against them. They're in excellent form (admittedly so are we), and Pulis is the manager. The man who found us out back in 2014 and sent us in to decline with that crushing home defeat to Palace. I hope Koeman has an answer that Martinez couldn't find.

Indeed it does....;)

Am I right in thinking only 7 EPL teams are allowed in Europe competitions?

That article on TS I posted further up, was indeed wrong.

From last season:

How will the Europa League affect teams?

The winner of the Europa League is now automatically entered into the group phase of the following season's Champions League.

However, should Liverpool win the Europa League and finish in the Europa League qualifying spots in the Premier League,
this does not mean the third Europa League place will become available for someone else. Instead, the Premier League will have five teams in next season's Champions League and two in next season's Europa League, instead of the usual four-three allocation.

So, if Man U win the Europa and finish outside the top 4, 7th will not qualify for Europe.
Also Leicester remain a potential spanner in the works...

If one of the top 6 wins the FA Cup and what you said happens, 7th would still get a place in the Europa League. It would just be 5 CL places and 2 EL. From what I can gather England is allocated 7 places maximum.

Say the table stayed the same...

United 6th: EFL Cup Winners and Europa League winners. They would get a CL place. As they finished outside the top 4, the top 4 would also be in the CL. That would mean that Liverpool in 5th would get a Europa League place, and 7th place would get the other Europa League place but only if any of the top 6 won the FA Cup. If Boro/Lincoln/Millwall won the FA Cup and all of the above happened, then 7th wouldn't get a Europa League place.

Arsenal and Spurs will progress, so we just need to hope Man City beat Boro and then 7th place will guarantee a Europa League qualifying slot as far as I can tell.

Didn't even think of Leicester! Very unlikely they will win the CL though.

It would actually be better for us if united won the europa and finished outside the top 4 as then we would not have to qualify and would go straight into the groups as per what happened in spain
