You know what's changed since yesterday? Absolutely nothing, as Leicester's progress in the CL had absolutely no impact on 7th qualifying for EL in any way what so ever.

Nobody knows mate tbh, The champions league & Europa League regulations directly contradict each other

We couldn't have got 9 this season. 8 was max as things had gone. But in theory...

If CL & EL were won by teams outside of Europe qualification we'd get 5 CL spots as you said.

However the 4th place in league wouldn't take an existing EL spot. It's actually an extra EL spot.

"3.09 If the UEFA Champions League titleholder and the UEFA Europa League
titleholder come from the same association and do not qualify for the
competition through their domestic championship, one of the following scenarios
applies:

...
c. If the association is entitled to four places in the UEFA Champions League and
neither titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic
championship, the lowest-placed of the association’s UEFA Champions League
representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into
the UEFA Europa League group stage and the access list will be rebalanced
accordingly). In this case, the association of the titleholders is entitled to one
additional place (total of five) in the UEFA Champions League and one
additional place (total of four) in the UEFA Europa League.
"

And the europa league regs say

  1. 3.06 The UEFA Europa League titleholder is admitted to the UEFA Champions League, at the entry stage determined by Article 3 of the Regulations of the UEFA Champions League. If the UEFA Europa League titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through one of its domestic competitions, the number of places to which its association is entitled in the UEFA Europa League is decreased by one. The created vacancy is rebalanced accordingly and priority for the UEFA Europa League is given to the domestic cup winners (in accordance with the entry stage as per the access list).

You've highlighted only half of that sentence. "If the UEFA Europa League titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through one of its domestic competitions,..."

Quite specifically does not cover the Leicester CL situation

No you quoted regs which quite clearly don't cover Leicester and united which is the scenario.

United and Leicester had to both win their comps, hence the europa league being decreased by one

In the 8-9 years that I have followed this site

THE SAME THING HAPPENS EVERY YEAR.

Lids post really convoluted stuff, people post opposite convoluted stuff, people get really confused. EVERY YEAR.

From next season rules are changing in terms of ENG getting a default 4 CL spots all in the group stages. They'll probably change some other rules around qualification as well - just for a laugh

I thought that's the UTD part of the mess and not relevant to us. UTD win the EL and get CL but England get the same amount of European places at they gain one CL place and lose one EL place.

I was initially debunking the "max 7" theory some people had, rather than covering everything.

Had both won we'd have got 5+3.

4th in the league would have got an extra (4th) EL spot. But it would drop back to 3 as we'd lose Utds League Cup EL spot (for the rule you stated)

Article 3.09b in the CL Regulations

The regulations are ambiguous, Europa league ones say the europa places would be decreased by one, the champs league refs say the europa places aren't affected.

No once again you've got the regulations wrong 3.09 b states you don't get any extra in the europa and the europa regs then state you lose one.

If the association is entitled to four places in the competition and only one titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic championship, the lowest-placed of the association’s UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the UEFA Europa League group stage and the access list will be rebalanced accordingly). Hence 5+2 and everyone else was right all along.

Those rules don't contradict each other. The CL rule accounts for the EL rule.

3 + 1 - 1 = 3.

Extra spot for 4th in league (+1), minus Utds League Cup spot (-1) = "number of places to which it is entitled in the UEFA Europa League does not change."
