All 2 years older. Some a lot nearer the end of their careers now.

Yeah, our track record would seem to suggest that. Can you explain why we never do well in the League Cup?

You seem to have made up your mind that you don't want us in Europe.

Personally, I like seeing us playing different teams, against different playing styles and cultures. It breaks up the monotomy of a moribund and highly predictable Premier League season, where most teams are slotted into a certain place and usually stay at that level.

We came close to 4th last season. Close is the key word, we didn't qualify for it. We've finished in the top 4 once in the last 27 years. It is not the norm, it is not something we should be expecting or suggesting that we should give up on the Europa for. Europa is about our level. I don't want it to be our level, but that's the reality under the current board regime and finances available to us.

Squad is 2 years older - for every Barry/Distin/Howard, there's also a Stones/Lukaku/Barkley/McCarthy.

And how close did we come to winning the europa league?

I've not made my mind up. I'm as erratic as Martinez - Yesterday I was saying yes, and play the young lads in the qualifiers and if they get through, bonus.

Playing the young lads is exactly what I'd do. The calibre of teams in the 1st qualifying round this season isn't the same as in the group stage.

Regarding the squad being 2 years older - you mentioned Stones/Lukaku/Barkley/McCarthy - I'd suggest only McCarthy is any better than he was 2 years ago. Possibly Stones too, although he still makes mistakes (as he did in yesterdays game for one of the goals). Are Barkley and Lukaku any better than they were 2 years ago?

Voted Yes.

But, if I thought turning it down would lead us to concentrate on domestic cup runs, I'd have said No. If we prioritised the League and FA Cup in the same way that we seem to have prioritised the Europa then we'd have a better chance of lifting a domestic trophy than the Europa.

Sadly, the argument for prioritising the League doesn't stack up. We finished 5th the previous season because ManU were poor. Our chances of finishing fourth next season are very slim, and it's about trophies for me.

We don't deserve to be in Europe next season. End of.

Deserve it more than West Ham.

We did, after all, play very well in the Europa League. Battering Wolfsburg, FC Young Boys and Lille -- all teams with Champions League Experience.

I think the Fair Play thing is nonsense, but it's here, so the deserving it thing goes out of the window.

What's the point in supporting a club but not wanting to see them play in a European Cup?

If it's all just about ensuring that we finish mid table each season so as not to miss out on a few extra million quid we might as well just give up on football altogether.

Balls to that - I want to see us challenge for everything, league, cup, Europe, whether it's realistic or not.

At the end of the day, there's no point in being an ambitious football club if you don't want what doing well brings.

When you start settling for a certain level and nothing above, you become Newcastle. And then you slide down the league because you have no ambition, no high standards, players couldn't care less, no pride, no adventure, no nothing.

Its nice to have a jonty around europe every few years to keep things exciting even if we do suffer in the league.

If we get in next year, the board has to step up and pay for extra players, and the manager has to recognize he needs several extra players.

Be good to get players going early too, with the qualifiers, adds more intensity to preseason, means they might actually be ready for the season when it rolls around. And when in doubt just play the youth

I'd take it just to maybe force him to buy early in the summer and get the squad ready by playing a few decent early competitive games. Plus it boosts the club profile and brings in extra revenue.
When it comes to Martinez tho I'm finding it hard to deal with anything that comes from his mouth!!
You only look how he has back tracked on his comments regarding our participation in the Europa league. For what it's worth our league form has been poor whilst in the playing Europe and whilst not playing in it.

With 28 games played this season we had 28 points, 8 points from 8 after Europa games, 20 from the other 20, I'm just not convinced the Europa was the crux of all our problems this season.

Being in Europe on a consistent basis helps to grow the clubs image imo, and sadly I'm not all that confident of us gaining entry into Europe's premier competition anytime soon.

Use is solely for youth/ fringe players. Maybe we could entice some young twinkie loanees over from other clubs if we can give them european football

Absolutely spot on.

Europa ruining our season is a myth.

Our slow/bad start to the season was before we even started in the Europa.

That November-February terrible run was after we'd already qualified for the Europa latter stages.

I am all for it.

I really took to the EL even though I thought Thursday night football would have sucked.

It didn't and those Thursday night home games led to somee great nights out in town afterwards.

It is close enough to the weekend to bring on that good old Friday feeling.

And the season starting competively in July?

Bring it on ;)
