They have been in the EU project since the start what was it something like 1958.
Members of the Euro zone since its conception, and have been running there economy for the last quarter of a century to stay within that, as a result they cant restructure there banking system as they want because it breaks Eurozone rules of membership.
but its nothing to do with the EU its the Mussolini or somebody else's fault.

Italy practically has a new prime minister every six months. The country has many problems that can't be placed at the door of the EU.

Tbf to Bruce, Italy is and always has been a shambles, but like Greece it should not have been allowed into the straightjacket of the Euro, which only benefits Germany and France........

Well, I think if you're looking to hone in on the source of a problem, you have to look if other entities have similar problems under the same circumstances. Few of the other members of the EU are run as chaotically as Italy, or indeed Greece before them.

In reality it's more akin to blaming the FA for the problems we're having as a football club at the moment, just because they created the rules of the game. Italy is a super country that I'm incredibly fond of, but their government is a shambles. As I said previously, they've had 9 prime ministers in the last 20 years, with Berlesconi in charge for 8 of those!

I read that. The way the EU are playing the ex pat situation sums them up really. The UK, which has far more EU nationals in the UK than UK nationals in the EU, is more than happy to take this issue off the table and just agree a reciprocal arrangement, thereby removing any anxiety from those involved. But for the EU, rules is rules, and the Portugese chap said it is 'impossible' to discuss prior to activating article 50. Well actually it's not 'impossible', in fact it's very easy and would be well received by a couple of million of EU citizens. They are paralysed by process.........

Err, gents??

http://news.sky.com/story/eu-nationals-in-uk-one-of-our-main-cards-in-brexit-deal-liam-fox-10605533

Hopefully none of those in charge of these negotiations lose sight that this is peoples lives they're 'playing' with.
The EU are playing with lives Bruce please watch the Portugal minister on the DP today on about arrogance it's pathetic the German leader is taking the same line - when ex pats from all of Europe do not to be used as a bargaining chip the EU take a strong line we take 3 times the amount on residency to our ex pats!
The belligerence of the EU is disgusting not our government who have tried to sideline it positively and sensibly trying to settle it before article 50 - if this gets nasty the blame lies solely with your wonderful EU berocratic zero tolerance stance it makes me want to leave this shower tomorrow!
They are nothing more than jumped up dictators how dare we vote to leave them ????

Yep 9 prime ministers. , left/right and a mix of everything else in coalition running the country and mostly failing, but only one constant for them all the big elephant in the room the EU,
Looks like no matter which way they turn they can't make it work so you get a party like five star popping up, they should just face reality and have the courage to leave for the peoples sake like we have done

Its 3.1 million Eu citizens to our 1.1 ex pats spread all over Europe no wonder Farage led a crusade against these mindless EU bureaucrats that portugal chap needed a slap around his pathetic chops just blaming us for voting to leave - remainers should watch the DP today first 12 minutes to see what we are up against a pompous idiot who ridiculed Andrew Neil by just using the same belligerent rhetoric Bruce asked me why I hated the EU - on that interview alone - I rest my case one horrible organisation!
I am sure the people of Portugal do not as nasty, and just happen to be represented by him, and they are nice to our ex pats out there he could not give a damn!
how dare we vote out - why have we not signed article 50 he needs to read his own rules of the EU any leaving country can sign it when they are ready to leave!

considering the article you've quoted there it's genuinely baffling how you've just typed out that the EU are playing with people's lives.

Especially considering you equate the U.K. Government to be playing poker and consider it a good thing.

Sorry Joe, I'm a bit confused. I'm sure you're not saying that it's fine for Liam Fox to use the bargaining chip thing a month or so ago, but it's the worst thing since sliced bread for this Portuguese chap to do so. That would be rather illogical, so I'm sure you're not doing that, because this is important. I'll use our own country as an example because I know more about it than I do the state of play for our ex-pats overseas. It's been widely reported that at one extreme we've had migrants living here receiving abuse, and more generally a growing sense that they are not welcome nor positive members of our society. If we're talking about treating people as humans, regardless of their race, colour or creed, which I'm sure you are, then surely our government should be addressing this publicly and openly.

What have the EU done exactly that has resulted in such shambolic scenes in the Italian government over the last 20 years? Were they holding Silvio's hand as he went into his bunga bunga parties?

have a read up on the response of the EU to Italian request to restructure there banking system tell you a bit about there problems.
As you say and its true like Greece before them its been of their own doing as well.
Reading the above its wrong for anyone to hold those people here or over there to ransom, when they upped sticks to start a new life they didnt know this was going to happen so why should they be made to suffer.
Bit of fairness needed on that score but it takes two to tango I suppose.
Sooner pull out right now myself than put up with the phoney war going on at the moment.
