All because of that stupid woman Merkel......

After the EU MEP's voted to freeze Turkeys progress into the EU, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim warned cutting off talks with the bloc would be far more damaging to Europe than Turkey.

Keen to hammer home the seriousness of freezing negotiations, a menacing President Tayyip Erdogan threatened to join a security alliance with Russia and China.

He warned Turkey were prepared to open the border gates to let the migrants leave if the EU continues to make threats.

Mr Yildirim said: ”We are one of the factors protecting Europe. If refugees go through, they will flood into Europe and take it over, and Turkey prevents this.

“I accept that cutting off ties with Europe would harm Turkey, but it would damage Europe five-to-six times more.”

Members of the European Parliament voted 479 to 37 in favour of a non-binding motion urging the European Commission and national governments to freeze negotiations which have been going on for 11 years but have long been stalled.

ahem...

At school, she learned to speak Russian fluently, and was awarded prizes for her proficiency in Russian and Mathematics.[33] Merkel was educated in Templin and at the University of Leipzig, where she studied physicsfrom 1973 to 1978. While a student, she participated in the reconstruction of the ruin of the Moritzbastei, a project students initiated to create their own club and recreation facility on campus. Such an initiative was unprecedented in the GDR of that period, and initially resisted by the University of Leipzig; however, with backing of the local leadership of the SED party, the project was allowed to proceed.[34] Merkel worked and studied at the Central Institute for Physical chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin-Adlershof from 1978 to 1990. After being awarded a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) for her thesis on quantum chemistry,[35] she worked as a researcher and published several paper

Firstly, British MEPs will have voted, so to pin the blame on a person who didn't vote is bizarre. Secondly, the leave campaign was rampant with threats around Turkey joining, so surely you're happy that they aren't?

I understand why the MEP's voted as they did, they were quite correct. My issue with Merkel is that she has effectively given Turkey a gun to hold to the EU's head regarding migration and it gives Erdogan the confidence to do as he wishes. There would be no migrant issue without Merkel and you know it. I'm not bothered one way or the other about Turkey in the EU as we are leaving the EU. However I would have preferred not having an escalation and keeping Turkey in NATO rather than they join up with Russia and China........

I already knew. Intelligent people can still act in a stupid manner though, and she most certainly did.....She has been accused in the past of being an agent of Russia and I would not be at all surprised if it was proven one day.....

There would be a migrant issue - there was one before her intervention, and had been since Cameron, Clinton and Sarkozy took out Gaddafi - but her unilateral declaration of a change in German (and in effect, European) migration policy for entirely short-term domestic political ends really did ramp it up another couple of levels. The deal struck with Erdogan was awful as well, which is exactly what one would expect from something that was negotiated over a couple of weeks and from a point (on the EU side at least) of utter desperation.

Tucked away in the back of this week’s Autumn Statement, a forecast has emerged showing that Britain is expected to stop tipping any money into the Brussels coffers in 2019-20.

It states that the total gross savings – not counting the UK’s rebate – from no longer having to pay into the EU budget are over £16billion every year, amounting to a total of £50.7billion over three years following Brexit.

Awesome news, the net contribution is about £8.5m

The Chancellor now has a £122BN hole in his budget over the next 3 years due to Brexit, which equates to about 14 years worth of these 'savings'

They could do that today if they wished (article 50.1)

Of course it's a totally false saving given it doesn't include rebates, it's causing a £120 billion bigger hole in the government's coffers plus the damage to future trade and increased costs.
