If the EU is taking as hard a negotiation stance as you suggest, then surely that is all the more reason to scrutinise the negotiations, as it means the consequences of those negotiations are potentially more severe.

Negotiations haven't begun and you seem to have the strange attitude of "well, a newspaper article suggested they're going to be hardline, so let's not bother even trying". Bizarre.
What negotiations will they be then if that messsage is being sent pointless debates in saying we wan this we want that?
When the two finger sign is aledgedly all ready there?

We've pointed that at ourselves by refusing free movement and sending Boris out to ask for membership of the single market.

And he argued correctly didn't he?

Weird that you posted a video that basically reinforced the point of the post made.

No. Andrew Neil shown that the quotes were taken out of context

Why would we accept free movement? The majority of the country don't want it.

Didnt some tiny bit of Belgium nearly scupper that deal at the last minute as well?

Yes. One region, Wallonia.

And that's with Canada.

I think at this point only a madman would think we'd get an FTA with the EU with total agreement any time soon. We'll be on WTO rules and all the baggage that goes with it.

No he didn't. He said they were before the referendum, which was his only point - that they were not timely. That doesn't mean they are out of context, because they were discussing adopting the EEA model in the event of leaving the EU.

Did you watch it? They shown the rest of the small clips. They're not arguing for the single market.

Yes, and it's nonsense. It's crystal clear what it was overall - singing the praises of the EEA model, long before the referendum. They changed their tune afterwards because they wanted to capitalise on the fear of foreigners and irrational hatred.

As said, it's the politics of the gutter.

There's an arrogance which is mind blowing. We're treating the largest trading bloc in the world like they're children, and they're just looking at us bemused and urging us to get on with committing suicide if we're stupid enough to do it for no apparent reason.

People like Calenda deserve to be treated with a lack of respect, though. He is a minister who has never won an election, working for a PM who hasn't won one (to become or as PM) either, and he has spent his entire career getting rich in the politics / PR / business merry-go-round. The EU is run by and for such people - which is why in his jokey little way he was quite happy to put nearly thirty billion euro of exports (we account for more than 5% of their total) and thousands of other people's jobs at risk, at a time when their unemployment rate is above 12% (and their youth unemployment rate nearer 40%).

Irrational hatred? All people want is control over their borders. You're in the minority.
