In my view, it's far more important that we get this right (or as close to right as possible) rather than rush out on a whim to satisfy the public and then find ourselves in deep trouble because practical, constitutional and financial concerns were overlooked to satisfy the currently inflated ego of the Tory party that feels it can over-ride the system of government in this country.

I'd have thought you would welcome direction from the highest court in the land on how to legally trigger A50?

Perish the thought that the government gets it wrong and that whatever parliament decides becomes subject to another legal case.

Apart from the cost and disruption to normal government business, further delays can only damage the economy further.

I have a problem when judges speak out publicly on potential upcoming cases and judgements. She is in grave danger of disqualifying herself......

As the Dutch finance minister said on Newsnight last night "we are in a lose/lose position"

All brought about by political dogma.

Yes, but political dogma brought about by whom. If we are in a lose/lose situation then both sides have an interest in sorting something out. I'm pretty sure that the UK will be willing to do so, and I'm certain that Germany wants to get it right, so now it's over to the politicians in the EU.........

But it's not over to the politicians in the EU.

Our parliament is sovereign. It can put an end to this act of economic self destruction by recognising the significance of the single market and the customs union to our economy, particularly when the world is entering a protectionary phase.

There's nothing wrong in saying 'we hear what you say but frankly leaving the single market now is economic madness. It will have to wait'. The hundreds of thousands of jobs that statement would save over the next few years make it very prudent to do so.

Merkel has started the slow journey of questioning 'free movement' by suggesting that the starting point for 'lifetime benefits' for Eu immigrants requires review. It is only this movement of people issue that is blocking a sensible agreement and she knows it. So an end can be put to this issue by the EU having a rethink. The Uk has no need to change it's position....

And yet he has still done it even after we voted Brexit , who'd have thought it......Bruce you are knocking on an open door, everyone agrees that we should be able to bring in whatever talent we want from abroad, but not have an open border that anyone can walk through.........

I'm not sure everyone agrees that whatsoever Pete. Indeed, most of the noise from both leave voters and the government is that immigration should be reduced, and reduced significantly, regardless of whether those migrants are in demand or not. I can scarcely see a scenario whereby immigration goes up, can you?

Of course. When our manufacturers and service providers begin additional trade they will require people. There are only 1.6M unemployed in the UK and many of them will not have the appropriate skills even with training. We should therefore top up any difference between requirement and availability with immigration.....controlled immigration.....As and when required....

Then you're not listening to the government you support I'm afraid, as they've pledged repeatedly to reduce immigration to the tens of thousands, and that was a central part of the leave campaign. To then flip that around and suggest we'll be having many more immigrants, just so long as we know who they are is absurd, and indeed goes counter to your own earlier arguments that such numbers are unsustainable because of the apparent strain they place on public services. The whole thing sounds as confused as Johnson was when arguing that free movement wasn't a central EU principle.

At the same time she is saying that peteblue they are looking at bringing in, that you can claim benefit for six months instead of three in your home country, while living in another making it easer if you want to up sticks and try your luck in one of the richer countries .
They will never learn or change.

If we only need tens of thousands then so be it, just those that we will need when we want them, in a controlled fashion......

It's a quandary that she will have to resolve. Germany has a massive trade surplus with the UK which cannot be filled by any other EU country, France is in a similar position. I'm sure they will work something out for us, basically they have to or they are in the crapper.......

And where do you get this confidence that the government are in any position to do that? The comparable stats for EU and non-EU migrants says that EU ones are better for the economy, whilst you had the Indians giving May short shrift last week because of policies to massively reduce the number of migrants from India. Based upon that, where do you get your confidence from?

I don't know where you get stats that show that Eu workers are better than Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or Indian workers for our economy. Also we will still be able to bring in workers from the EU so I'm unsure as to the real point you are making.......
