It really hasn't been. The free movement of people that we have seen over the past few decades has been a disaster, largely because it has been conducted on capital's terms (edit: ie that they have profited hugely from it, without paying the required amount to deal with any of the consequences).

See, you can't make statements like that without quantifying it. For me, economics is but part of the equation, but our economy has undoubtedly benefited by the additional labour it has had access to, and the treasury has certainly benefited too. There is also the enormous cultural benefits of having such a diverse melting pot. There's a reason London is regularly voted as the greatest city on Earth, and it isn't because of the Cockney's.

So you're cool with the idea of a second referendum - if things aren't looking great in a couple of years time, or when the deal is announced?

If, after we have left and tried and failed, I would have no problem in removing the current government and putting one in place that makes it work.....we gave it 40 years to see if we liked the EU, so we can give it 40 years to see how we get on without it.....

These things do unfortunately happen Bruce, in every society. And just like we have rapists and murderers, we might wish for them not to exist, but they do. In the same way that a few Scots were nasty to the English during their in/out vote, we could not accuse all SNP voters of the crime. There were even people from London fighting each other the other night because of a game of football. It's madness but it happens everywhere......

Ok, answer me this Pete. Given Trump's apparent attitude towards sexual assault, do you think if he became President that the number of sexual assaults would go up or down in America?

Trump will not get in Bruce, and if he did your anology is weird anyway it's like saying if Clinton gets in will e mail fraud rise over there!

The rhetoric used by the leave campaign was largely anti-immigrants. How is it far stretched to link this with a rise in anti-immigrant abuse since the opinion poll was conducted?

Totally agree with you. In fact it would be a total derogation of duty by any Government to continue down a path which clearly was damaging to the Country's long term interests.

This might well be so, in the long term. Early indicators might not prove accurate though...in the long term - if you get my drift.

There have been plenty of times that Parliament has gone contrary to the 'will of the people' - more correctly labelled 'public opinion' and on some pretty contentious subjects too; Hanging, Prostitution, Homosexuality.

But this is not 'public opinion' or even 'the will of the people' albeit the media version thereof.

This was a duly constituted referendum (the why's and the how's we came to have it are yet another discussion) that was supposed to be binding(?)

To turn this over, like it was a public enquiry into building the Heathrow new runway or DK or whatever would seem to be fraught with potential problems of a serious constitutional nature...not that we have an actual written constitution, but you get my drift.

Given there are, in broad terms, Brexiteir's and Remainer's spread about the public supporters of all parties both major and fringe. The same for the Parliamentary parties

The phrase - total dogs breakfast springs to mind...and also...cause more problems than it solves.

Are you suggesting that Theresa May is racist ? It is true that leaders of countries can intentionally or otherwise influence the weak minded, Hitler in the extreme, Duterte in the Philippines and even that nice Nicola Sturgeon on occasion. But would it be right to say that if Corbyn became PM then anti semitism would increase, I don't think so.......I hope.....
