I am so certain that the impact of Brexit is so damaging to our economy and more widely our society, and thus the future of our children, that politicians seriously have to consider putting aside the decision of the referendum in the national interest.

Throughout our history as a democracy the sovereignty of Parliament is perhaps our most important constitutional consideration. Parliament should take into account the referendum decision, but now decide whether or not the decision of the people is in our best interests. If it is deemed not to be, then Parliament should make that decision and explain why and act in our best interests and not implement Article 50.

With all due respect Esk, you can't put aside democracy "this one time", it's a terrible precedent. The decision has been made, Britain thrived as an economically sovereign nation before, and it will do so again.

Well why not just scrap voting and make May dictator for life?

question time last 3 weeks has discussed EXACTLY the same stuff on the EU and some members of audience just keep saying 'we voted leave , lets leave' the panel then trys to explain/discuss what type of brexit and what do want to remain a member/not a member of related organisations to the EU

to which the audience responds 'we want to leave'

people just cannot/refuse to understand the complexities of it

A precedent for overturning democratic decisions based on an individual's gut feeling? What else?

It's the second advisory referendum in our history, both have been on the same issue. Hardly a dangerous precedent.

They would of be following a legal framework that's in place and one that refrains the government ignoring binary referendums & generals.

That is probably the most undemocratic and dictatorial statement I've ever seen on here. You know best, pat the voters on the head and tell them their votes don't count if they get the wrong result. The decision on implementing article 50 was made with the vote. The Government and Parliament have been told what to do, now they need to do it.......

If the leave negotiations with the EU went absolutely horribly and if leaving was sure to leave us with an economy that would be in a hole then it would obviously be the duty of the elected representatives of the UK to refuse to sanction article 50.

It wasn't a coincidence that they voted for this kind of referendum as it quite rightly gave the commons a get out clause in case it went belly up.

Sounds like the mental gymnastics of someone who wants to change democracy because they didn't like the result
