The UK does have a lot going for it, but we're not a US or China who can drive the international agenda on their own. Whether Pete likes it or not, the EU has parity with those two by virtue of speaking on behalf of 27 countries, and we've seen its influence with things like GDPR, digital taxation, and to an extent climate change. So the only way the UK can have similar influence is if it cozies up with AN Other major power, which then reduces the sovereignty that was apparently so important.
We are middling country, many middling countries have lots going on. Nothing wrong with being middling just know that you are then you know your worth.

Size is most definitely not everything, as the Nordic countries illustrate quite well. You do sense that we're struggling to shed the Colonial mindset of us as a power that has real influence in the world, especially with the repeated retorts to nostalgia by the government.

Yeah but you are preaching WTO membership blithely because you and the Tories refuse to accept there cannot be a ‘Brexit’ while your border is enforced in Ireland.

You are floundering. You abrogate moral responsibility with calls of let the EU or Ireland impose a border and all it delivers when it this is all a problem of England’s making.

Dont give me the nonsense of its for the people of Ireland to decide our future. We voted to Remain.

The U.K. voted to Leave or Remain…otherwise we would have London leaving the U.K., together with Liverpool and Merseyside. Glasgow and Edinburgh would have left the rest of Scotland. We voted as one United Kingdom…

I’ve said all along that I like the idea of us being just this small island, with the political, economic and military means to do well and be safe. The US, China, EU or whoever can do the world policeman bit, fight amongst themselves, get involved in peace keeping in areas where we have no strategic interests. We can just be us. We don’t have to tag along with any major power, we are quite secure with what we are already able to do. As I’ve said quite a few times, it only seems to be Remainers who want to belong to some ‘superpower’, I‘m very happy with the clothes we currently wear…..

No doubt elements of UK society and this government panders to what is now fantasy, in they still believe we are a world super power. Time to get real.

The very existence of the Protocol drives a horse and carriage through that take.

Often think about the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713 which gave Gibraltar to the UK. Spain cannot just walk in and take it over because it no longer considers itself bound by it.

Spain would be found to have breached the treaty and there would be consequences including international sanctions by allies of the UK (Although that group is rapidly dwindling).

Breach the Withdrawal treaty and we are going to suffer consequences because the UK will be in the wrong. We will be dragged in front of the ICJ in The Hague, found guilty, and our reputation will be trashed. Law abiding states will blacklist us, and apply sanctions, let alone "thweee" trade deals.

And this is basically what UK under Boris is threatening to do, ridiculous grandiosity.

I am far from convinced that the international community sees us as the bad guys in this scenario.

By the way are you suggesting that we have handed over NI to the EU in the same way Gibraltar was handed over to the UK?

Astonishing assertion if so.

It's almost like the worlds 6th biggest economy and the world's 5th biggest spending armed forces has actually found it bollocks.
