Go on then. Square the circle of ending freedom of movement/control of our borders with the GFA/free movement between ROI and NI.

If there is a solution to that, I am all ears, cos no one else has produced anything other than vague warblings about some yet to be seen "technology".

The only way they could have done it is to be radically fair, and say that in any UK-EU deal that every EU citizen had to be treated equally.

Then agree a position with the EU that was better than the EU expected but worse than that in the CTA (so something like a right to come here and study/work/live etc with a settlement scheme, healthcare access but no voting and no benefits). They'd have had a chance of playing off Ireland vs the rest of the EU and might have been able to safely dismantle the CTA and the GFA, replacing it with a renegotiated settlement that recognized what has happened.

Obviously he's gone down the underwater roundabout route instead now.

No, you're quite right, I was too absolute. However, and as @tsubaki mentioned, it could have been managed better and have been less obstructive to the day-to-day lives of the Norn's.

The CTA allows for free movement of people between ROI, NI, U.K. mainland, Isle of Man and Channel Islands. This has been in operation since 1923....

So why is this a problem then?

The EU. This has been the problem all along. If the EU backed off, the U.K. and ROI would have it sorted in five minutes, but the ROI are being directed by the EU...they weaponised the border issue from Day 1.....

Well, they have a point. If the Uk/ROI just "sorted it", stuff from the UK in ROI could be shipped to Europe with little controls, as per us pre brexit. Unless I am being totally dense.

Thats a different issue. The CTA covers travel and indeed settlement. Produce movement is covered or should be covered electronically, everything should have a point of origin and a point of destination. The EU however want the U.K. to follow their rules and standards, hence tractors having the wrong type of soil on their tyres, and the ROI under Varadkar saw this as a cunning ploy to gain a ‘United Ireland’. Politicians are causing the problems but hopefully Lord Frost may find a way past their political games. I would guess that Martin and Johnson could find a solution fairly easily with goodwill on both sides. It’s in no ones interests, other than the bureaucracy in Brussels, for this to continue. They’ve had nearly five years to sort this out, but Barnier didn’t want it sorted.....

Even more pathetic than usual. We are nothing more and nothing less than a 'third country' to the EU now. You lot voted for Brexit so there's no point in blaming the EU. Your lying Prime Minister Johnson knew he could either contravene the GFA or stab tne loyalists in the back regarding an Irish Sea border. No doubt you will have seen him telling the loyalists on camera to tear up paperwork. Ireland, and Barnier, wanted a full deal. Johnson, Frost and all the other idiot Brexiteers didnt even want a debate in Parliament over the Withdrawal Agreement. Turns out none of them understood it...

Varadkar has about as much interest in a united Ireland as Arlene Foster does.
