Sorry Bruce, I’ve been dipping in and out between lessons with my granddaughter. My answer to you was in respect of your first sentence. I hadn’t watched the video, which I have now done. Personally I believe the the PPE was a complete fiasco, money was thrown around like confetti and perhaps for the right reasons, but not necessarily to the right people. When you are desperate for stuff and normal supply routes cannot provide (Germany refusing to export PPE for instance) you need to try something different. I am not aware of normal PPE supply companies who were not included in this process, there the issue seems to be the additional routes, mates, colleagues or whatever that set up quickly or did something for which they may not have had a background. However the country could not afford the time to go through normal procurement processes and it is a fact of life that a drowning man does not particularly care from where the newly arrived life buoy was manufactured or supplied from.

My view on this is simple and non political, review each and every contract, were the goods delivered as requested and in a suitable quality and value for money cost/price bracket. If the answer is yes, then move on. If the answer is no then investigate further for any acts of illegality either from the ordering or supply point of view. Anybody not delivering the goods or found to be overcharging, having not returned monies to the government should be prosecuted....
It's quite fortunate that in this scattergun approach to procurement so many of the juiciest contracts went to Tory donors. Imagine the odds. I suppose we should be grateful none of their mates had the brass neck to pretend to know how to make vaccines.

Amazing how many things this Government and it's appointees claim 'nobody could have predicted' despite people constantly telling them things are likely to or guaranteed to happen.
I think it's at this point that you're asked to make a decision about something fantastical in order to highlight how difficult a job Dido has. Like if the next variant arrived would you rather it was a duck the size of a horse or 100 horses the size of a duck. Well? We're waiting. If you get it wrong, 100,000 people die.

Bit niche, but even my beloved Games Workshop are suffering with the current chaos, despite the company posting record profits in the pandemic

Here's a message from a German online store about the whole thing:

"I think it's time again to inform you about the current situation with Games Workshop.

I don't want to deceive you, so here is the unvarnished truth:

I have had several conversations with Games Workshop employees from different areas (sales, accounting, etc.). Also many times with UPS.

All orders are packed and many of them have been in customs for weeks! The UPS says documents are missing - Games Workshop says everything is filled. Small parts of larger orders keep arriving "which supposedly shouldn't have any documents according to UPS".

Total chaos! I can't say exactly when which order will arrive. That it will arrive is undisputed... But no one can say whether it will arrive in one or four weeks.

The situation is getting more serious by the day. Throughout the EU, traders are not receiving their orders and have been doing so for more than a month now. This is a big problem for many, also financially. Games Workshop usually collects the invoice amount within a certain period of time after the order has been placed. The only problem is that the goods have still not arrived in the meantime.

GW is now taking action after receiving considerable complaints from many retailers. Only orders that have actually arrived will now be paid. Of course, Games Workshop cannot send out large orders on credit without a limit and have to make massive advance payments themselves. That's why the dealers who order more than the tight credit limit are not affected by the regulation and continue to pay in advance.

Since we accept pre-orders for Games Workshop goods and also demand payment in advance, the customer is left holding the baby, since he has paid but receives the goods much later - this contradicts our own quality standards, which annoys me greatly. Of course, our sales also suffer from this (if there is nothing in stock, people don't buy!) - but compared to the traders who are completely paralysed by the lockdown, our position is still better. I am very grateful for that!

I believe that this situation also has a massively negative impact on Games Workshop itself. Many retailers in the EU are buying less or no Games Workshop products at all because of the supply situation.

I'm curious to see how things develop in the coming weeks!"

Maybe he should've done 'everything in his power' to stop it being there, rather than, perhaps, doing everything in his power to put it there in the first place.

You can hear the light flickering on just, alas not long enough for any sense or enlightenment.

"In the short term, there are a number of issues which I would not describe as teething problems," he told MPs on Tuesday.

"They are significant issues which bear on the lives of people in Northern Ireland, which do need to be resolved"

At least they'll be so good at filling forms that they can easily make up any shortfall by selling to *checks notes* North Macedonia :hayee:

They're surely going to sort it out at some point, but who is actually doing something about this? It sounds like utter mayhem
It's Kafka'esq to be honest. The notion that making traders fill in a bunch of bureaucracy to access the EU is great for them as they need to be great at handling bureaucracy to trade with other countries (despite our gazillion trade deals) is utterly absurd.

Much already known, at least now it's finally been acknowledged. Going forwards... But at least we know Brexiteers dont care.

Testimony earlier to the Scottish Affairs Select Committee, Brexit is like Pickford after a night out Tyneside
