What are we going to give up in return? What tariffs are we reducing, what standards will we be expected to cede on?*
What laws do we currently have that conflict with CPTPP membership?*
How does it improve on the EU deal?

*What industry in the UK will then be most affected/advanced?
I dont know mate not party to the talks, more than likely service industry,( second biggest in the world) robotics, science, luxury cars whiskey ect
Most of the up and coming countries are getting a bigger middle class so there needs will change and hopefully we can benefit.
It also takes tariff's off and gives equality in trade goods quotas,
I know the yanks were not keen on it because this and the effects on their farming.
Only quess work on my part.
Does it improve on the EU deal , well to me it's just a trading block.
The EU evolved into far more than that so it depends on how much you value the rest that goes with the EU deal.
I am a brexit supporter so your views on that will more than likely differ to mine.

Trade and tariff reduction don't work one way, there will be interests pushed from existing members.

Brexit isn't really an issue with this, other than the obvious forwarding it as a substitute for EU membership* I have no reason whatsoever to have a difference of opinion with you about it. This is entirely about the UK pursuing it's interests outside the EU, which for everyone's sake, we want to be a success.

My point is that we should, now more than ever after promises/nonsense talked around Brexit, be watchful about what promises are made as part of the terms for membership to CPTPP

Personally it seems of little economic value to the UK given the existing agreements (though every little helps I suppose); distance, already reduced barriers to trade in most of the existing members etc. Where we might look for benefit is through a new agreement on services, which was left largely absent from EU/UK trade agreement.

*It's not comparable btw.

Have wait and see.
I generally start from the stance that anything a politician says needs taking with a pintch of salt.
The service's is a big hole in the agreement with the EU, cant really see why it was left out myself,
if I were on the EU side I would have wrapped it up to stop the ability of the UK manoeuvring in the future .
From a UK side it's such a big part of economy , I dont know why it wasnt near the top of the list.

The text is there and you can look at what each attached nation will likely want access to/reduction is barriers against based upon their trade strategy.

Do as we say not what we do, Tory mantra. Be careful what you speak Boris, crying wolf bites hard.

The fundamental difference is nobody expects Johnson to actually do it. It's all just hot air.
