edge AZ specifically signed up to say there were no contracts that they had signed up to that would impede the delivery of their doses. Now it seems that, actually, there is.

I agree 100% that AZ have to honour our deal; my point is that AZ have to honour the one with the EU.
Not an expert and might be totally wrong on this but I thought by saying best efforts they were giving an understanding that with that they would try to get the to the numbers wanted as quickly as possible, not a guarantee ?
As the UK already had a deal surely for 100 million surely the EU should have factored this into there expectations.
I was listening to a programme about vaccines ,a while a go and it stated it was not uncommon for whole lines of vaccines to be unusable for one reason or another , so it would be hard to guarantee a specific number in tight timeframes a company as big as AZ would surely be aware of that ,when taking contracts up and should build something into the contracts offerd to customers ,
If they didnt they need taking to task .
Still it's a EU , AZ conflict not a EU , UK one which the commission has made it into.
As AZ are part Swedish owned are there any sections heading that way from the EU ?

The EU is cutting off its nose to spite its face.

If they start restricting the export of EU produced vaccines then it will only serve to [Poor language removed] Pfizer and Moderna (two massive US big pharma companies).

They won’t mess around - they will not stand for their global supply chains being interfered with. These companies are all about profit. If the EU pettiness threatens to impact their profit margins then they won’t think twice about pulling production from Europe.

edge, all I can suggest is read the contract - the best efforts thing was what AZ should do (ie: treat this really urgently), not that "well, we tried our best lads, never mind" as its been described

Probably, but the damage has been done unfortunately.....
Agree, but what about the damage done to the UK since the start of the pandemic by this incompetent tory government? Not all of "lefty voters" voted remain. And that's disregarding the previous 10 years of unneccessary "austerity policies"
But Bozo will claim credit for the vaccination programme, and the past will be forgotten.....how many deaths eh?

I'm just speechless at the "oversight" there! It's like going through all the procedures, all checks and balance, to press the nuclear launch button, and then going "oops didn't mean that!"

Bollocks!

Nobody in their right mind believes it's an oversight - what's happened is blind panic, and you haven't stopped and thought about the bloody implications. The same reason an unredacted copy of the contract is available. Panic. Stupid, pure, political panic.

They upset the Irish government too. They've basically gone behind their back and gave zero warning just to get at Britain.

Its as shambolic as anything we've seen from this Johnson government

I genuinely don't get why though. It can't just be because they're petrified Britain has made a success of a vaccination rollout immediately after Brexit. If that was the reason, why draw so much bloody attention to it????

They lost the plot and now they've calmed down and seen sense

There is no rationale behind what they did. It was just plain daft, but hopefully this is the end of it now.

I dont honestly know ,you would have to have more knowledge than I have about the terminology of this type of contract to get a true cast iron view on it ,seem a bit ambiguous to me on face value it could mean one thing to one side and something else to the other side.
Sure we will find out soon enough.
