Just experienced my first 'issue' with the EU, for this very website.

Having to buy a pretty expensive piece of software.

Anyway, when buying;

* Please choose the billing location. We collect VAT within the EU in accordance with the tax laws.

If I select EU Individual/Citizen I get slammed with;

If you're an individual outside the EU, you can process the order at 0%.

Seems odd to force EU Citizens/Individuals to pay 24% VAT? o_O

Dare I think for one moment here I'm actually getting some benefit here from being outside the EU? Yikes.

Where are you buying it from?

Would need the link for the software...
I've had the opposite issue with online shopping all but one of 8 items went up between Christmas and last week in a basket I had saved!

Will message you it. To get to those screens though you need to register and provide some details of website for the software because pricing is tiered based on website traffic.
Looks to be the same tax as console and IT stuff all part and reaction to Trumps trade war, with EU over it's subsidy to Airbus big employer Deeside and Liverpool etc

It's just one fella (not sure if UK or USA) behind that firm who is a software developer who has setup a side gig company (the one I'm buying from) to sell one software product from 9th January 2021.

It just threw me to be charging EU individuals 24% VAT.

I am no expert, but it all seems odd.

Firstly, I am not sure there is an EU wide VAT rate; they dont, or didnt, set ours, thats for sure. If it is standard within the Eurozone, then that would suggest its based there. ROI?

Its priced in Euros. I have never paid Euros for anything online, so that looks strange as well. Maybe its down to the importer to collect VAT?

In short, not a clue.

Aye.

All I can grasp is if I my billing address was within the EU it was an extra 24%.

Wondered if this would become standard for digital software.

Is digital software excempt from VAT? Like if you went to a shop here? (If they actually exist)

Seems unlikely to me.
