The way to nail this on the head is to tell EU boats that anyone found illegally fishing in U.K. waters will have their boats confiscated under the proceeds of crime, or will be barred forever, even when a fishing deal is eventually done...The boats cannot hide....

To be honest Pete we shouldn't even be getting involved unless we have to. Their own authorities should be telling them all that.

I agree we do need to be having talks with either the French or EU authorities about how the matter is going to be policed and what the penalties are going to be. However knowing what the French are like, if they do try to carry on fishing and their own authorities do nothing about it, I can only see this escalating. They may just decide to protest by blocking channel ports as you suggested earlier.

Macron is screwed either way. If a deal is done they get fewer fish, if a deal isn’t done they get no fish. That’s why Macron wants ten years of carry on fishing, so he can win the next election then sod off......

Of course they should but they won’t. Nor will they hit them with penalties. We should just be very clear, illegal fishing by a particular boat means you don’t get to fish here ever again. If you come back we take the boat. Then we can concentrate on one boat at a time.....

I do indeed remember the Cod wars, but technology and international EEZ laws have moved on a bit since...it’s just a matter of obeying the law......

Ironically, it was Iceland imposing their own 200 mile fishing zone that caused the latest cod wars, that led to the UN introducing the current 200 mile Exclusive economic zones.

Yep, at the time we were fishing right up to their 12 mile limit when they unilaterally set a 50 mile limit (I think).....

We sell most of our fish back to the EU anyrate, and have sold them our quotas.

The issue he has now is the outcome has to be the worst possible scenario for their fishing fleets. Not only will they have no legal access to British waters fishing, but other EU boats will now want to fish in French waters I would guess and he will be under pressure from other EU leaders in that regard. Who knows what the French fishermen will do but they won't take it lying down. My guess is that they will run the gauntlet and continue to fish in our waters.
