The sabre rattling headlines of the Mail and other like papers are totally irresponsible, but I've come to expect nothing less from our gutter press.

Naval boats are on standby to police a potential situation if called upon. Nothing wrong with that and hopefully the EU (French) fishermen will opt not to break International Law so there won't be any incidents.
The response from the “gutter press” would have been clearly anticipated if not encouraged. Even this shower aren’t that stupid.

Diplomacy during complex commercial negotiations is best pursued discretely without dog whistles and playing to the audience if you are serious about achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.

Even some Tory MPs don’t get it. This guy is the chair of the UK defence committee. Maybe not for much longer.

At the end of the day, with effect from 1st January, the UK is not part of the EU, and unless otherwise agreed EU fishing boats have no legal right to fish in UK waters. If they don't continue to there won't be any problem. If they do, ideally it should be down to the French and other EU authorities to police their own fishing fleets and then the UK won't need to get involved.

If they don't, then we either let the EU boats break International Laws, or we intervene. If we intervene then our police force doesn't have the capability or the equipment to do this effectively, so it has to be the navy.

All that's happened so far is that naval ships have been put on standby in case French fishing boats break international Law and their own authorities do nothing to stop them. You make it sound as if our naval warships will be patrolling up and down the English Channel from January 1st.

And that is something the French will do.

I've seen that and it's fair comment as regard that article. As I said it's irresponsible. I've yet to see any comments attributed to any current minister or armed forces commander other than a retired Admiral. If there is and I haven't seen it then I'll hold my hands up.

The way to nail this on the head is to tell EU boats that anyone found illegally fishing in U.K. waters will have their boats confiscated under the proceeds of crime, or will be barred forever, even when a fishing deal is eventually done...The boats cannot hide....

Unfortunately I think they will too.

There's another fishing rights agreement between Norway and the UK that's been agreed to start on January 1st, but the Norwegians have said they'll suspend it until we also come to an agreement with the EU. So British boats won't be able to fish in Norwegian waters from that date. If any of our boats break that rule then they are breaking the law and I'm happy for the Norwegian authorities to police that.

Brussels has told EU member states not to entertain the prospect of any individual agreements with the UK that could ease its hardship if it crashes out of the bloc in three weeks.

The alleged aim is to force a chastened Boris Johnson back to the negotiating table in 2021 by allowing the UK to suffer the brunt of leaving without a deal.

Citing a diplomatic note from a Friday meeting of the EU’s working party on the negotiations, the Financial Times reported that a Brussels official told the assembled diplomats that an “incentive must be maintained” for the UK to return “as soon as possible” to the negotiating table in the event of no deal.

Those present were reportedly told not to do anything that could replicate the benefits of EU membership for the UK beyond the four steps set out in the European Commission’s contingency plans, published on Thursday – which Downing Street has not yet said whether it will accept.

“A deal would, of course, be preferable, but it is beginning to look like the question is not whether we can stop the Brexit ship hitting the rocks, but how it can be refloated,” the paper reported a senior EU diplomat as saying.

It echoes reports from Brussels last weekend that some member states – in particular, France, which threatened to veto a bad deal – had begun to argue that the bloc’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier should not be pressured by the impending deadline and should consider parking talks until 2021 rather than rush into a subpar agreement.

The paper cited a second senior EU diplomat as saying that the bloc was aware such a strategy was high-risk, given that the UK may well choose not to return to the negotiating table despite the consequences of no deal.

I quite like this as Norway has also said that EU boats will also be barred at the same time, so unless there is a deal EU boats will be barred from both U.K. and Norwegian waters at the same time...Macron playing a blinder here.....

Already seen that Roydo. He's the same guy that made the tweet I said was justified.

If it did come from official sources I agree it's timing is completely wrong. But all I've seen so far is gutter press sabre swinging quoting secret reports and inside informants.

Remember when "we" surrendered to Iceland in the infamous Cod Wars in the 70s? We had a much larger Navy then as well.
Sabre rattling at its best..
The fish should be sent back to their "own" territory

You can almost hear Macron saying ‘they will come running back for a deal’...it’ll be interesting to see who lasts out the longer....

I do indeed remember the Cod wars, but technology and international EEZ laws have moved on a bit since...it’s just a matter of obeying the law......
