The funding, while not insignificant, is not the main thing though, it's the access to talent, and the collaborative opportunities presented by Horizon. While Patel has said about having an easy visa for researchers, we'll see how big a hurdle having any visa requirements at all versus free movement represents, plus how being a satellite to Horizon rather than a fully fledged member.

Actually on this point I think you'll be pleasantly surprised as to what 2021 onwards looks like. I think access to talent will be ok.

As I say, it's a psychological issue imo. With free movement, it created an environment whereby EU nationals were seen as equals. With a visa, no matter how 'easy' it is to get, that environment isn't there. It's not as welcoming an environment at all.

I agree that access to talent is a big issue, though I still find it hard to believe how small a % of funding came from the EU, and to which of course we contributed via our membership fee......

I think the UK has secured around 13% of the total Horizon funding over the past funding period, so it's not so much that we haven't got our share, but rather that the budget itself isn't 'that' large.

We will just carry on. The economic impact of leaving the EU is a speck of dust compared to what we already have to deal with because of the virus....
You see this is what people will have you believe. But it’s dependent on time horizon really.

The shorter term impact of Covid are fairly large but almost entirely temporary. It was have accelerated some secular trends but generally trends that would happen anyway.

The longer term impacts are much less severe relative to brexit.

Covid will only exacerbate the longer term effects and be a head wind for relative to other countries as we come out of this period.
