I would rather have spent the extra money with SST and produced a proper Galileo look alike. I’m sure that they will be able to make this system do ‘something’ but I’m surprised that they have gone for a low orbit solution tbh.....This smacks of a civil service fudge. It’ll be interesting to hear what the MoD really think of it.....

Do you remember way back when, you said when we were out of the EU you would take full accountability? You have what you want. A whopping Tory dictatorship, calling all of the shots. Not really on to pass the buck onto the civil service for government cock ups, is it? Time to deliver the great future you promised.

You will have to excuse me Bruce for not taking personal control of this matter, I can only apologise....meanwhile I’m pretty sure that neither Boris nor any other member of Parliament has the faintest clue on the best technical solution to a Galileo equivalent, for which the U.K. provided the major parts of the technology. However, I think we did hear a little while back that the head of the civil service favoured a low cost option and this smacks of one of their clever wheezes which will end up costing us more money. I have unfortunately seen this happen a few times with military developments.

This is not a case of passing the buck, more an understanding of how it will have come about....‘Prime Minister, there are three options, one of which is with totally unproven technology and will take 20 years, the second option requires an expenditure of (insert obscene amount of money x 5), the third option is cheap and quick and will give you a political win”......

Surely the problem is that the government have clearly mandated that a UK supplier is chosen to do this, and with the best will in the world, SST are nowhere near ready to provide a GPS network. Nowhere near, as indeed no British organisation are. The problem isn't that Ancelotti only buys crap players if Moshiri tells him he has to buy from the Gulf Pro League. We have broken our ties with the EU in large part because we were told that it would make the British economy stronger, so there's a clear mandate to 'buy British'. When those British firms aren't up to the job then you get poor outcomes.

Just like the COVID app, Government could not get that right when out lives depended on it...

GPS satellites operate in completely different orbit to internet satellites. So will have to be completely redesigned...

And the KU band they use is stronger, however, more the signal will degrade in variable weather... So windy rainy countries it's not very good. Think of home WiFi band, slow 2.4 reaches further than much faster 5... Actually don't think at all!

Going forwads its a crazy bat poop purchase so compass and ordance survey map would be a wise investment.:drunk:

It will be good for ur um internet...

It is sensible policy to use UK capability when available. SST and Astrium made the satellites for the Galileo programme and a good portion of the base stations were developed in Portsmouth. This is not a UK technology, engineering or manufacturing deficiency, it’s a cost issue, pure and simple. We put our technology and over £1bn into Galileo (about 10%) and now refused PRS access by our friends in the EU after May and Robbins just rolled over. It would probably have cost £5Bn to replicate Galileo and of course there would be a time lag. The ex cabinet secretary, Mark Sedwill, was the driving force for a cheap alternative, raised months ago, and may have sold us a pup I believe. But we will see If the hardware we are buying will do the job and provide the military resilience required...though I doubt it personally......

lol

"Who's responsible for delivering this, is it you?"

"I think it's actually you, Prime Minister".

That's an exchange on the C-19 restart implementation plan, but should tell you exactly how all this works, regardless of what LBC and Farage say.

More Cummings ignorance popped up on YouTube today. It really is incredibly that this bloke is viewed as so clever. What's saddest of all, of course, is that this ignorance is still driving both Brexit and it appears the covid response.

Sadly our leaders (elected and co-opted) are in many ways thick as pig [Poor language removed]. But not quite as thick as their supporters.
