Not to mention, it's very unclear how the EU will come out the other side of this as well. We're in an unprecedented situation at the moment that requires people working together, which almost never happens when party politics gets involved.
The Trojan horse method, let's sit down and discuss and pass time away and sneak it through, no thanks.

The EU should really take this opportunity to at least implement an EU-wide medical surveillance and monitoring body with powers to direct national governments to respond appropriately to outbreaks like this, share information and best practice straight away between governments as well as make sure national governments have the appropriate capacity to respond to crises starting in their area.

It kinda underlines the relative lack of power the EU has to ride roughshod over national governments at times like this. They're good at slow and deliberate actions, but rapid response isn't their forte at all.

To be honest Bruce there is very little they can do, all the countries have control over their own Health services, so go there own way. then you then get situations like in Italy were they dont produce face masks, France and Germany have stopped exporting them, so italy has a shortage , not something you can really blame the EU for.
The lack of leadership getting shown globally is being shown to be very weak.

Not at all mate. Not blaming the EU for anything really, merely commenting on their relative lack of clout in this situation in response to their apparent encroachment onto the sovereignty of nations. They never could really do 'that' much.

In fairness we're the same in the UK. The four countries have a fair degree of autonomy in their health and education services and they are all reacting slightly differently. The fact that they all appear to be falling roughly in line with Westminster does give me a little bit of comfort though.

I see Mr Barnier has the virus. Is he over 70?, he can't be far off it if he isn't.

Without wishing anything bad on the guy, it may take the death or serious illness of high profile people like him for some people to take this pandemic more seriously.

It is inevitable that a high profile person will come a cropper due to this (sadly). You'd hope it wouldn't take such a thing for people to take it seriously, but you might be right.

Most people are taking it seriously, but there are still a few who think they know better. Ironically, a lot of them are in the older generation who are more at risk.

So amidst all the crisis surrounding Europe and the corona virus, what are the EU doing ? Well apart from providing absolutely no assistance to Italy, they have just slapped them with a €7.5M fine for supporting their hotel industry. In addition they are working furiously on the accession of Albania and North Macedonia to the bloc. Meanwhile China and Cuba are trying to help Italy during this crisis.....
