If the EU and the UK were businesses, then what the EU is suggesting (for the UK to not compete against the EU) would be anti-competitive...therefore illegal in UK law. Indeed, agreeing not to compete against each other is also called a 'Cartel'. Otherwise known as a protectionist racket.

Did you hear Nigel say that on the radio?

As far as I am aware the EU are insisting on a level playing field - which is the opposite of what you suggest. They are not going to agree to a certain tariff code on a particular product of the UK then goes off and massively undercuts them through state aid or dodgy standards.

A level playing field, regulatory alignment, or whatever else the EU want to call it, is anti competitive.

And no, I didn't hear Nigel say that. It's UK law.

Isn't the difference that cartels agree on restrictive practices for the private good, whereas states agree for the greater good, at least of their citizens. Your logic would otherwise make any treaty at least immoral. But it is good that we agree on standards for lights on cars and recognising court orders for children, for example.

Anyone posted this yet?

The EU guidelines published today which sould give an idea about what to expect in the coming negotiations..

As has been the case throughout this process, we know what the EU position is. Still waiting for something from the UK.

Section 89 is a good one. Now bearing in mind that the whole of our EU trade only accounts for about 10-12% of our GDP, they want us to even have a ‘level playing field’ in taxation. In what Universe do these people actually live....

I think it's because we want tariff free access to their market more than they want tariff free access to our market. As such that's the conditions they have set.

And, they are clearly concerned about trust with the UK, so want to have the option of imposing unilateral retaliatory duties.

A quarter of brits!? 1 in 4 people in this country say they’re bothered when they hear people talking a different language. Can’t believe that. unreal.
The arrogance of our nation laid bare. Utterly shameful. What world are people living in.
I’m bothered when foreign women talk to each other in foreign languages as they could be saying mean things about me and if I can’t understand I cannot be aroused.

When you have immigration by numbers, these sort of things happen, but of course, most people won't have the profile or the network to make such a fuss so will just be brushed under the carpet.

No one cares about experts in gender and class. It’s all about the fishing.

I think it's worse than that, because it clearly displays that immigration processes aren't really using any kind of personal involvement at all. It's a "computer sasy no" approach to people's lives, which is probably why it produces markedly worse results than when people are left to sort themselves out. It's complete lunacy.
