I see that Simon Coveney from the ROI is telling us that a deal can’t be done within 12 months. We can all now breathe sigh of relief. Unless of course Boris decides to ignore this no mark and keep to his deadline. Personally I would prioritise a deal with the USA, get it done then speak with the EU. If they want a deal, fine, if they don’t then fine.....meanwhile Mr Coveney will be sidelined, the ROI will be ignored, and the big boys will play the game.....

So 'this' is what winning with grace looks like?

Ew.

There comes a point where countries have to move on. As has been pointed out many times on here it’s 27 v 1. But at the end of the month we are out at which point it’s 1 v 1. The 27 can of course do whatever they wish, they can argue for whatever they want, internally within the EU and then with the U.K. But the U.K. will only listen to one voice from Europe, whoever is doing the deal. They can all comment, moan, complain, agree, push, change, or argue, but only one deal will be done. This phase is going to be different. My point being that Coveney and co have had a free run so far, pulling strings and demanding whatever. That is no longer in play. Now it’s getting serious, trade is involved, and only the big boys will have a say......

Would any of the nations not have a veto on any proposed deal ?

Of course, although the Eu rules for a member state leaving say it’s by majority. But whatever or however they treat this, majority or veto, the U.K. is negotiating two trade deals, One with the USA and one with the EU. Both are bigger than the U.K. but the USA is bigger than the EU. The EU sells an awful lot to the U.K., wants fishing rights and defence and security arrangements. The USA just wants to trade and continue being our defence partner. My guess is that we will wrap up a USA deal before an EU deal and that we will trade with the EU on WTO terms if they don’t pull their finger out. The Coveneys of this world can whistle in the dark......

So Boris is going to the USA in early February and will probably address both houses. With a decent relationship with Trump and a position where a trade deal benefits both the U.K. and the USA (and aids Trumps re-election). Something will probably be in place mid year. Meanwhile the 27 with whom we have had a harmonised trading relationship for five decades will be arguing about every sentence and comma and telling us it can’t be done for years. This more than anything else shows why we need to get out of this slow, cumbersome, backward looking, self serving entity. The world is moving on, sometimes speed is of the essence, something that the EU only discovered after the U.K. decided to leave.....

I wish we still had the ability to sticky posts for later vaulting. The only way Johnson gets things done quickly is by bending over and thinking of Britain. That's essentially what he did with his 'EU deal', as it was one already agreed previously by the EU and rejected by the UK as being utterly rubbish. Now he's convinced apparently worldly wise former executives that it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Theres a reason why complex trade agreements take time and are full of annoying details...

I'd be interested to see what the UK negotiation objectives actually are, aside from 'take back control and get Brexit done'.

Are you even aware what is going on geopolitical wise?
