without a GE we will still be in the same boat we have been in for the last few years , break the dead lock one way or the other, i am no fan of this government by the way
The government has got a second reading from Parliament for its Withdrawal Agreement Bill. Which is the first time that Parliament has voted in any meaningful way in respect of pursuing Brexit

The WAB given a second reading, subject to amendments, is likely to pass into a third reading. There was a clear indication from Parliament to this effect, given the voting intention. Had a reasonable period of time been given to allow for proper scrutiny, Labour were asking for a month to give that scrutiny, then the WAB could have comfortably passed through Parliament around the date of the GE.

But the Government has instead pushed for a general election, so will lose the time, focussing on an election programme, that could've been used to give the WAB a fair scrutiny in Parliament and 'Get Brexit Done'

Apparently the Government is happy to delay. I'd say the Government priority isn't Brexit at all, but a GE to increase the majority in the HOC.

It would have been heavily amended mate. That's the only reason it passed, because moderate MPs would have hoped to soften it - if they couldn't, they wouldn't vote for it.

It's unlikely it would have got through.

I do find it odd that a Government that supposedly wants to 'Get Brexit done' is deciding to have a General Election rather than just actually 'Getting Brexit Done'.

Just weeks ago, Tory Pete and his ilk were saying the country didn't have the appetite for a general election and just wanted to get Brexit done.

It would have passed the commons with the amendments made and there would have definitely been amendments made.

The pace of the original schedule was designed not to allow it, but Brexit could've still been delivered in principle.

So I can only assume that the Government doesnt think Brexit is it's top priority.

That one is a fairly easy one to answer, the Brexit they could get done is not the Brexit they want. The Tories are looking for a mandate to do what they like, with a majority there is no need to put in protection to crash out with a no deal this time next year. No need to put in any amendments on workers rights. Etc.

Johnson could have gotten the withdrawal bill through the house with these changes and have looked stronger in the public eye for it to go on to an election. To decide to freeze it all means they don't want the rest of parliament messing with the bill.

I know the answer, my point is that its not about Brexit, it's about 'Boris'. Because we have a petulant manchild as our prime minister, who, the moment he doesn't get exactly what he wants, portrays himself a victim by spouting a classical reference from his childhood or throws his toys out of the pram.

In principle being part of a Federal Europe, if practised correctly in a fair and just manner, would only serve to make us stronger, both financially and in terms of security. In short, if equality was indeed it's raison d'être I'm sure things would be playing out in a very different way today. In the beginning, History showed us that this was certainly was the case here in Merseyside. Talk to folk who remember us joining and they will wax lyrical about how living standards improved here in Liverpool.

Unfortunately over time, as globalism prospered as an ideology, the EU project became more about greed and power than any egalitarian cause. It started to center around it's most powerful country, an irony that wasn't lost on the older citizens of our nation. It also didn't help that many unnecessary and illegal wars forced many people to seek solace and settle within its borders, thus exacerbating population levels. Over time the average working-class UK citizen started feeling disenfranchised. They wanted to be heard. The referendum was a chance to strike at the heart of the establishment. Finally, they got their wish.

However, it was for the wrong reasons. They were sold a dystopian nightmare of what their towns would eventually look like without border controls. Bogus promises of endless pots of gold for our beloved NHS seemed only right!

WRONG

Every reputable economic think tank has provided credible research stating that once we leave, no matter what deal is finally agreed, we will be financially worse off than before. Maybe the next generation will enjoy its benefits, it certainly won't be ours! Some go as far as saying that the inevitable shrinkage of our economy, certainly in the short term, will lead us into a recession. Austerity will raise its ugly head once again and target the very people who voted for a UK exit.

People with money will not feel its effects as the common man will surely feel. They will ride it out with the smug self-satisfaction that their children may eventually prosper from our self-harming act of self-sabotage. As is to the why some of this will surely be blamed on the pointless gathering of the last few dying embers from our ever-shrinking and once gigantic colonial empire.

On a final note. I understand a successful country to be one that is a stable democracy, self-sufficient with good living standards that attempt to bridge fairly the divide between the rich and poor! I believe whether the UK is in Europe or Out this can be achieved if our elected representatives had first and foremost the people at the forefront of their priorities. Sadly this is never the case as the old saying goes, 'power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely!'
