We had VAT before we were in the EEC. But as it was pointed out above, its far more complicated to say its an EU tax.

And my understanding is that the amount collected by a member state goes towards their annual contribution. Or sommet like that, but its been a while since I was closer to that line of work.
I'm sure Pete will give a detailed answer with reference to UK legislation and VAT directive to explain his reasons.

And normally the government would get the blame. Certainly May was getting the blame and from people such as myself too. The deal has changed slightly though, which is why the DUP and ERG are now on different sides and the DUP May work with Labour and not the Tories. Boris has changed the dynamics, he got the EU to open negotiations when everyone else said it was impossible and with parliament doing everything they could to cut him off at the knees, and he is now seen as the Champion of an EU deal. The blame has shifted to those that are stopping a deal and actually making no deal more likely. He will come out of this smelling of roses and Corbyn will be up to his neck in the smelly stuff.....just an opinion....
I don’t claim to understand the way things work but in my humble opinion I think you’re view is slightly skewed. The Eu haven’t budged, it’s boris who has made concessions, he hasn’t made the eu open up to discussion at all, he’s backed down and has tried to sell it to the gullible once again.

If that is so then you will welcome the opportunity of a General Election.......

May wasn't even that stupid to try and sell out NI.

But he has the laws of France, dictated by Brussels, as he has chosen. We chose to have the laws of the U.K. not dictated by Brussels. There is more to it than geography.....
"Laws of France dictated by Brussels" "Laws of UK not dictated by Brussels";
Good Lord! what are you taking Pete? Need to wean yourself off it.

No mate, I’ve just spent 40 years working with different companies and governments all around the world.....
I find that hard to believe. Surely with all that insight and experience you cannot really believe that a relatively unimportant nation like the UK can stand all alone. (even with the help of WTO)
