Excellent report below from Tony Connelly (an Irish journalist who's covered every aspect of the Brexit negotiations) on how we got to the Thornton House meeting between Johnson and Varadkar and what's happened since. The nuts and bolts of the possible new customs arrangement are explained for idiots like me. It's basically back to the future for Johnson, who's having to pick up the ideas of the May Deal on aligning two trading blocs, but applying it solely to NI rather than the whole of the UK.

Tony Connelly is IMO easily the top journalist covering Brexit in these islands and has been from Cameron landed us in this crisis.

I looked for his comment and other Irish journalists like Denis Staunton just lately. A welcome change from the clueless partisan Little Englander hacks who are, in effect (and as Paul Mason describes them), "government stenographers".

Should have been a basic general knowledge test before anyone could vote. If you don't understand what a bloody border is then you shouldn't be able to vote on a border issue!
We were not voting on the Irish border it will be now down the middle of the north Irish Sea - as the EU used this border business as a polictical weapon to stop the democratic vote the EU have a history of overturning referendums.....

Oh, but you were.

You just didn’t know it.

That much is very clear to you now.

It is just a pity you never bothered yourself to do a bit of research into tthe issues and problems surrounding voting in favour of Brexit.

The problems with the British imposed border in Ireland were always going to delay or hopefully even halt the march to Fantasy Island a.k.a. Sunlit Uplands.

Xenophobia is the fear or hatred of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange.[1][2][3] Xenophobia can involve perceptions of an ingroup toward an outgroup and can manifest itself in suspicion of the activities of others, and a desire to eliminate their presence to secure a presumed purity and may relate to a fear of losing national, ethnic or racial identity.[4]

Xenophobia can also be exhibited in the form of an "uncritical exaltation of another culture" in which a culture is ascribed "an unreal, stereotyped and exotic quality".[4] According to UNESCO, the terms xenophobia and racism often overlap, but differ in how the latter encompasses prejudice based on physical characteristics while the former is generally centered on behavior based on the notion of a specified people being adverse to the culture or nation.[5]

Wrong again. Brexit was agreed 2 years ago before it the DUP made a phone call to Teresa May and threatened to bring her government down if she went ahead with it. If you want to blame anyone for stopping it cast your anger at them and the ERG group that supported them.

Wish it had been the 'end of'.

Blimey Joey - before free movement there were borders for example between France and Belgium and Holland and Germany - these were manned by customs and police, not the military. Used to make holidays exciting when I was growing up.

Are you really saying a border is only hard if it has soldiers?
