There will a form of words to help them celebrate that they have defied the EU when in reality the DUP have laid the foundations for Irish unification through energising the constitutional question.

There should at least be a plaque in Crossmaglen square commemorating the DUP contribution.
Pull down the statue of Carson at Stormont and put one of Big Arthur Arlene in its place.

They are expendable now and must surely realise that no one gives a hoot about NI over there. They need to rescue something and according to our local press now want a deal as they have completely misread their own voting base. Yes, Union Jacks are class and all that but when your farming base loses money then the cows will truly come home.

In the immortal words of Ian Paisley at the time when NI cows were exempt from the ban on British cattle during the F and M crisis......”our people are British but our cows are Irish” lol

God no Dave, leave it up.

And carve this quote from Carson on to its plinth...

Sir Edward Carson, reflecting on the struggle against Home Rule and the partitioning of Ireland, ruefully stated:

I was only a puppet, and so was Ulster, and so was Ireland, in the political game that was to get the Conservative Party into power

And let that serve as a reminder to a future generation of Ulster Unionist leaders (if indeed there is such a thing) that in the greater scheme of things they are nowt more than useful idiots in Tory power games.

Well said Khal.

It is an apt and timely quote for those GOTers not as well read in Irish history as your good self.

Not afraid to admit that I feel I have learnt more about the nuances of Irish politics from these threads than anything else, ever.

My history knowledge was ok, if a bit rusty, (History A Level was taken taken on a slate ffs), but the deeper, "real" stuff has been truly eye opening.

And here we are lids. Endgame.

The GOT Paddies have sign posted that the last colony would be the immovable object. The Good Friday Agreement seems to be the hurdle that Boris cannot soar above although to be fair, he isn’t the first faller.

A victim of your colonial past and time to man up, stand by your hard fought for treaty or re-enact history and hope no one notices.

London has to address its colonialism at some point and this is it.

The ‘freedom’ arguments are laughable in the political context of your military enforced border.

But yeah, the EU are using as as bargaining chip, we don’t know what’s best for us, pat on head.

Army, I fear it will be a fudge again, as usual. We know that the lovely Arlene will present this utter backdown as a victory, but the Irish can will still be kicked down the road. Thus, the DUP will revel in their 'victory'. It is not wrong to say that Ireland unfree will never be at peace, and so therefore this problem will rise again in the (near) future. The Irish lads know the score. The potential resolution of the EU problem does not resolve the Irish Question.

How do you see the climbdown by the unionists happening mate?

This a great piece of double talk, Dave.

They will go along with “cross border co-operation” to “avoid the Backstop”.

(that the Backstop is all about “cross border co-operation” is a fact to be ignored :))

I have to hand it to them, though.....that is a splendid piece of spinning lol

Fair play. Pity others just call the Irish lads in this thread a "gang". Instead of listening to and embracing their knowledge like you did.

I am Irish and even i have picked up some very useful stuff from the lads (in this and the other thread) on here from the northern part of our fine country.
