It can only happen at the moment because the Government dont have a majority. And no one is running scared of an election per ce; they are unwilling to allow Johnson to announce one, then for him to change the date to after Oct 31st which would mean we drift out of the EU without a deal.
Noted about the election.

In terms of changing the law to get their own way however, that is still a massive precident to make. What's to stop anyone doing that in future? I know you say it's because they don't have the majority but then their own party voted for it as well.

It's the defenition of 'if I can't have my own way then I will make you do it my way'. What's not to say we go through a split election again? The way things are at the minute and the Brexit party being the new fad , no reason why we don't end up in the same scenario without a majority. Then another law is passed for the losing side to get their own way.

Can you see what I mean?

From a couple of weeks ago: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49532243

'At the meeting with Mr Cummings, Ms Khan, who worked under Mr Hammond, handed over both her personal and work phones, and her phone logs were checked.

Evidence was found that she had been in touch with former colleagues who had worked for Mr Hammond, but not that she had been involved in leaking any sensitive government information.'

Goose / gander etc.
She might be coverd by the civil sevice code on this?
Like i say bank workers anybody with access to personal data ect are mostly coverd by this stuff for security reasons
I dont know if minsters ( is there a code of conduct in place )are and Cummins certainly will not be .
Getting away from brexit , it is setting a presedent .

Going forward logiclly that means every MP could be open to this no matter how sensitive the subject they were working on

Mate, I'm saying it was Cummings etc who SET the precedent. And as far as I can tell Cummings has the same status as Sonia Knan, i.e. special advisor to the Govt, not civil service.

How likely is it that we'll see future administrations that are in such a precarious position (ie not having a majority and/or unable to control their backbenchers to such an extent they can inflict crushing governmental defeats)?

In normal political times we'd be seeing a GE or VoNC long before this state, because such an administration would achieve nothing and poll terribly. The only reason this clown car of a government limps on is that the timescales imposed by Brexit make any other move potentially suicidal for the country, and the government retains a base of Brexiter loyalist that somehow sees it leading the polls despite its impotence (and the fact Corbyn is massively unpopular with middle England helps too).

We didn't make our own laws, the EU make them all...we aren't sovereign :coffee:

I know where your coming from , she should get a claim in.
Might be wrong but i think she made the mistake of giving permission to Cummings look at her phones in a personal meeting.
And was found to be lying.
Cant see anyone on the goverment side doing that.
