this could well be a complete breakdown of the Tory Party in the Commons (given the abuse Johnson got at the 1922 apparently), but there is the possibility that it is deliberate (apologies for quoting myself):

edit: in fact, I would not be that surprised if (assuming todays bill passes) Boris tries to bring back May's deal - no deal as an option will have then been removed (so the ERG / DUP might back it), the 21 rebel Tories will presumably back it as well, as will the group around Kinnock. Boris could then call an election whilst simultaneously claiming credit for Brexit whilst denying that the deal was anything to do with him.

He is going to vote it down tonight. The rest is irrelevant. If he truly thought he'd win, the timing is irrelevant.

How can you get a fair deal in any walk of life if the person on the other side of the table knows there is no circumstances where you will walk away.
