It is sadly the obvious conclusion that the technologies simply don't exist, as even in the slow moving world of government, you would imagine three years would be ample time to at least get to the testing phase. It's just a shame that no one really seems to have held the government to account on this issue.
Our new MEPs are trying to do just that Bruce. We have shouted about it but now our electoral mandate is demanding that we are heard.

It isn’t unreasonable to expect a London to uphold the Good Friday Agreement that they literally fought hard to achieve.

It is a strange one, especially as the amount Johnson is tossing around at the moment, you'd imagine they could have put a tidy X-Prize style bounty together as a carrot to invite someone to solve it, but there's been nothing. It makes me laugh really as we're constantly told that now we're 'free' we can hold our own politicians to account, and yet this is yet another example of them getting a completely free pass from Brexiters.

Mainly down to a self serving media that is looking after it's own interests, in some cases openly promoting its opinion and agenda. I know you most likely allude Labour at fault, however, they don't control media and what questions it asks or reports...

The point is that it cannot be solved without constitutional change. It was a deal to stop a war and one which London happily facilitated.

The GFA copperfastens both our nationality and our freedom to cross north and south unimpeded.

Tory rhetoric of ‘no border’ is disingenuous as they know what they have left and are trying to apportion blame elsewhere.

Nope, this issue has nothing to do with Labour. They may have done a better job of holding them to account on it, to be honest I don't remember hearing anything from Long-Bailey (who I believe is shadow business) on the topic, but the buck stops with the Tories, who have been awful. I'm a little bit surprised that the Commission haven't been doing testing, if only in private so as not to be seen to facilitate Britain's exit, but haven't heard of anything going on.

Fair dos. I know practically nothing about the GFA so bow to your better knowledge on the topic. Tech is more my bag so I felt slightly better equipped to comment. They're making a pigs ear across the board really it seems.

"The Conservative government talks about how technology could avoid a hard border under their plans, and how new systems can provide checks and collect tariffs. But even if that were true, it misses the point. Opposition to the idea of bringing back a hard border to this land isn’t just about avoiding paperwork or tariffs, important though that is. It’s about deep rooted cultural and community ties. An open border is a symbol of peace, two communities living and working together after years of conflict, communities who no longer feel that their traditions are under threat."

Jeremy Corbyn Thursday 24 May 2018 Queens University Belfast.

Has anybody worked out yet how the UK can claim to be "taking back control of our borders" while at the same time claiming that the only land border between the UK and the EU will be left wide open without checks as it is at present ?

No, me neither. There is no point in leaving the EU if you are not going to have a border separating you from it.

Brexit has now become a cosmetic exercise to prove a political point notwithstanding the severe economic damage it will cause to all concerned.

@Old Blue2 had that one covered, I recall. I asked him that specific question and he replied that he would be playing his guitar come the day of reckoning! So far that's been the Brexiteers' most intelligible response. I had no comeback to such a reply......

I think you’re confusing border checks on goods with immigration checks at the border

Bloody expats, coming here and clogging up our NHS.
The only emigrants returning will be those who are rich enough to have kept a house in UK. Those who sold up to spend their retirement in Spain, France etc are stuck. I know people in France who have been trying to sell in order to return, they've been trying to sell for 3 years. The Brexit fear has killed the market.

Can't even get that right, eh, Emlyn (bad name, squire, using an RS name!).

I said I would take a photo out of my window to show the sky hadn't fallen in. Brucie the teefal Mod got his panties in a wad over that so I didn't post a pic in March this year.

I play guitar every day, so even on the 'day of reckoning' I'll be picking up one or more over the course of the day.

Have a nice day...

I can't trawl through all the posts but you said that you would just play your guitar when I asked you about how you would solve the Irish border conundrum. I thought at the time that it was a particularly strange answer, but with the knowledge that you have no doubt accrued since, do you have a sensible answer? How would you advance Brexit, and how do you get past the Irish border aspect?

The Emlyn thing was a bit of irony with a lad on here. Don't read anything adverse into it!
You have a good day too mate.
