Its been over three years since the vote so if UK primary and secondary producers have not already got well-developed Plans B by now, I really fear for them after 31 October.

Ireland produces enough food to feed something like 38m people and the Republic has a population of about 6m. We import lots too and, as I posetd earlier, we are UK's biggest beef export market in the EU.

This is how the common economic market works at its best, and is tariff free.

Everything changes once a country leaves the EU, but for all its many bureaucratic faults, from an economic point of view it is madness to leave a tariff free Union with a potential customer base of well over 500 million people..

It’s not about the economics and never has been. I’ve stated hundreds of times that I would love to be in the EEC that I voted to join. I, personally, do not like the ‘political union’ it has become....

Wasn't the EEC essentially the Customs Union and (eventually) the single market? So you'd be in favour of the softest possible Brexit that retained these and just removed us from the political decision-making?

I would like a free trade agreement.......

I would like a free trade agreement.......

Is that a "no I don't want to be in the CU and SM, and therefore wouldn't love to be in the EEC I voted to join despite earlier saying the opposite" ?

Actually I probably asked the question in the wrong wy earlier. Replace 'would you be in favour' with 'would you accept'.

Imagine if May had suggested that.

At least May kept the facade of no deal going for a number of months, it's been days and wheels are coming off Johnson and his waffle...

Farage is already pulling away from any sort of working together with Johnsons sect.

Keeps the Brexit spectrum nicely split for tomorrow by election, should be shoe for the LibDems...

Actually he does work incredibly hard, and I don’t particularly oppose the Mercosur deal. I’m sure that he would find a niche or produce a product that sells on quality or price. The Mercosur deal would probably hit France and ROI rather than the UK tbh, which is why the French have already taken to the streets. I would like to see tariffs removed as they are just another tax and defensive in nature. You are in favour of free movement of people, I am in favour of free movement of goods.....

I'm in favour of free movement of everything tbh.

Pete when I was a lot younger and more radically Irish nationalist I resented the loss of sovereignty to Brussels and dreamed of some sort of independent Ireland that could trade all over the world.

Decades later I realise the economic reality that we are far better inside p'ing out of the EU tent than isolated outside, and in fairness due to the skills of our experienced civil servants we punch far above our weight and are well respected across the 27 others, including UK, as a country that will find solutions.

The last Irish Presidency took on a very ropey CAP negotiation and delivered against all odds.

Lots of things annoy me about the growing political dimension of the EU, but there are too many people's livelihoods at stake to take the luxurious position of standing in splendid isolation.

One example: I believe that 90% of Welsh lamb is exported with most going to France. What have the processors been doing to source alternative viable markets?

The PM'S remarks yesterday are, as I posted earlier, very worrying for that industry if HMG is only NOW talking about helping to find other markets.

The vote was over three years ago.

Tbf, and without being condescending, there is a big difference between the ROI and the U.K. We are but a small country, yet still the 5th largest economy on the planet. We are still small but still bigger than Russia. So we have nothing to fear going it alone. Economically we are fine, politically we sit as a permanent member of the UN, we are part of the G7 and G20, we are part of the Commonwealth which is still the largest grouping of people on the planet. We will do ok outside of a European grouping. We are also the EU’s largest trading partner in the world, so if they really want to play silly buggers, then so be it........

Pete, I think we could enjoy a few pints and conclude with different views remaining intact as well as friendship.

Believe me that I am giving my view with a lot of serious experience.

The Commonwealth will not be capable of taking the levels of UK exports at the price that UK exporters are accustomed.

Tell UK exporters that their future market is the Commonwealth as opposed to the EU 27/8 ?? Guaranteed Euro as opposed to......

Australia and New Zealand have long ago left the Mother ship so where are your price viable markets??
