Not really, never underestimate a politician wanting to cling onto their own jobs. I’ve seen too many industrial MD’s do very similar.......
In Ireland the politically savvy thing to do is to not back down to UK demands. Both Varadkar and Covney know this. Both are singing from the same hymn sheet. If there's a no deal Brexit, it'll be the fault of the UK and they will both have majority support from their electorate.
Besides, Covney ran against Varadkar for party leadership (and therefore PM) and when Varadkar won, he made Covney deputy PM and minister of foreign affairs. Covney is being groomed to take over, why throw him under the bus, especially when the blame will be clearly laid at Johnsons feet, and rightly so.

Of course and everyone in the U.K. understands this. But while the ROI can all point the finger of blame at the U.K. and Johnson, if there is a no deal it will be a little bit more than having a laugh at the English and carrying on as before....but maybe you are right......

We have more in common with the USA than the EU and as the five eyes proves we put more trust in our English speaking partners. When the chips are down who would support us either militarily or economically, USA, Germany or Spain....let me go further (Canada plus Australia and New Zealand) or ( Romania, Slovenia and Hungary) ?...

How many times have those militaries come to British aid when Britain has been attacked?

Paranoid now aswell.

Why is it you try to turn it into us v them? That the Irish are being malicious and only doing what they are doing because they hate England.

Of course people are laughing but not at England but at the shambolic government you have who take a vote without an actual plan.

Ireland and its people do not hate English folk believe it or not. Why you keep insinuating this is beggars belief.

Anyway why would you expect any other result. You government has been through so much crap and still doesn't know what its doing.

It's only response it to repeat the garbage about it being the EU fault and how they are bullies and that Ireland are stupid to follow the EU and will get what they deserve etc ...

Your lot have dug in and instead of doing anything constructive it wants to play the blame game.

If you are so worldly and experienced you wouldn't be so bloody narrow minded. It's why people are starting to call you a troll because you sound ridiculous.

Thanks. I see what you mean. Close links exist between all sorts of countries that ebb and flow over time. I would not just buy into the English language = our side, non English language = not our side though. I think it depends a fair bit on the position of the leaders of the respective countries at any given point in time or what the issues at stake are. I can’t comment with confidence about Romania, Slovenia and Hungary although I think maybe the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland and Portugal would consider themselves to be pretty close allies to the UK. I have to admit that I would not trust Trump as far as I could spit if UK interests diverged from his perception of US interests.

And just that last issue I mentioned because it came up in (non-GOT!!) conversations I had with a couple of other people. Why might third party countries offer a country of about 60 million population better terms in trade etc. than they would offer a bloc of about 400 million?

I agree there are ebbs and flows, after all the U.K. did burn down the original Whitehouse and Portugal is our longest standing ally. But in the last 100 years it’s stands up.

In terms of your last question, who is asking for ‘better’ terms. The U.K. is still the worlds 5th largest economy, there larger than all of those below. Those above consist of countries who may seek to put one over us in negotiations, especially the USA and the EU, but both will see that having an agreement with the U.K. is beneficial in their own negotiations between each other. In addition the countries below 5th might actually enjoy dealing with a country with a bigger economy who is looking for genuine free trade and not the protectionism displayed by both the USA and the EU.....

Try looking in the mirror before posting......

“People in Northern Ireland will “come to question the union” with Britain if there is a no-deal Brexit, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said.
Mr Varadkar told the MacGill Summer School it would be “provocative” to discuss a potential united Ireland before Brexit, but said that could change if the UK crashes out of the European Union without a deal.
Preparing a white paper on unity or establishing a forum on the future shape of Ireland before Brexit could play into the view that Dublin is exploiting the UK’s withdrawal, he added.
“That obviously could change in the event of a hard Brexit,” he said.
“Those questions will arise whether we like it or not, and we have to be ready for it,” Mr Varadkar said about the future status of Northern Ireland in a potential no-deal scenario.”......

I'd like to send the immigrants back, but in a good way... Sweet jesus!
I saw one of them Facebook meme things the other day.... it stated that all benefits should be stopped for illegal immigrants..... as far as I’m aware no illegal immigrants in this country receive any benefits

    • Battle of Britain pilots. At about the most crucial threat to our freedom as a nation.

And other than the USA, Canada, NZ and AUS, no other country that I mentioned in my original comment is contained within your list.....

No, but you said we have more in common with the US than the EU re military stuff. At our hour of need, they didnt really do a great deal. Plenty of European countries did.

Its a pointless debate anyrate, a myriad of reasons behind who was flying for the RAF at the time would render a spat a waste of time. But the numbers did surprise me.

Not exactly "asking for better terms", I was thinking more about how we could hope to get better terms from whoever we seek deals with in the Brexit future when not part of a large bloc compared with the terms we have got already or would benefit from in the future if we were staying in. I agree that countries all around the world will seek deals with the UK and over a very long period of time deals will be agreed. I just think they are likely to less favourable terms than we have now as a member of the EU and if they are less favourable the UK will be worse off commercially as a result! If we are worse off commercially going forward that will reduce the chances of enacting social and economic change that would be to the advantage of parts of the U.K. and the people living and working in the UK who are struggling a lot.
I am a bit surprised that you think the USA might try to put one over on us. I do actually think they certainly will try and will probably succeed given the significant disparity in economic power between the two countries. I think dollars will speak louder than the Special Relationship at that point. Thanks for your answers. Bonne soirée!!!
