You're right and I didn't like the way he went after Frank lampard over his divorce, but he's quite well read on brexit and counters the admittedly flimsy arguments pretty well. The latest one I heard was where he was quoting ids saying the EU are tough negotiators.

I agree, he is well read on the topic, which is why I think he could be a lot more constructive if his shows didn't so often descend into uninformed Brexiters being shown up for their daftness. What's his aim with the show? If it's to educate people then I'm not sure the approach works. If it's to make himself look smart then sure, it's cool.

Have you met an informed brexiteer? Genuine question. I'm yet to hear from one who can give me proper quantifiable reasons for leaving the EU. It usually boils down to just have faith, there's a reason it's called GREAT Britain, or a take back control of our borders nonsense.

No, it is usually hard to comprehend their rationale, but if we are to break this impasse then we can't just stand on opposing sides shouting "you're wrong" can we? If you look at the US it's a good example of just how poisonous that becomes.

So it wasn't about sovereignty (and all the misunderstood views around that)? It was about just not liking Europe?

I’ve said this many times previously, I want an independent U.K.. However if for some yet unexplained reason we really had to belong to some massive political union I would rather it was with the USA than the EU.....

That sums up the UK's relationship with the world. On one side those who want to belong to a huge trade bloc i.e the EU to enable it to be protected inside a single market and customs union and trade deals with the rest of the world. On the other, there are those who see their fortunes better hung with the US in particular any trade war dealings/shooting war implications from the White House. They would rather tag onto the US's coattails.

What do you mean by independent? If you mean not having to sign up to certain customs practices or legislation then the UK will find that it is impossible to do that without becoming completely isolationist. What is it about the concept of not signing up to trade deals that so excites you? And why do you want any deals to be with the US rather than the EU?

I have no problem with trade deals and that’s why I voted to remain in the EEC all those years ago. What I never signed up for was a political union with the aim of becoming a United States of Europe. In terms of history, background, language and approach to foreign affairs, we have far more in common with the USA then we ever will with the 27 countries making up the eventual EU and that is why, if I really had to, prefer to align with the USA.

It's not going to become the United States of Europe, all unions are inherently political, but what is actually your issue with it becoming so? Is it a general dislike of globalised politics? If so, I'd assume you're supportive of devolution, Scottish independence etc?

In terms of history? We're closer in age to many European countries, we have similar colonialist pasts, monarchies have intermarried, we have the same most popular sport...
In terms of social and political outlook we are much closer to European countries, even counting this lurch to the right we've had. We have very little in common with the US style of democratic government. I'm not sure we're as close to the US and as far from Europe as you think.

Bruce, as we have found out on here over the past couple years, it is nigh on impossible to “educate” Brexiters about the perils inherent in this mad rush to the cliff edge.

They will believe any lie Farage et al tell them and declare everything else to be fake news.

Lampooning them is the only thing James O’Brien can do.....and he does it very well :lol

I tell you something about the States......it is very different to England.

I lived there for ten years, go over for a visit every couple of years and I love the country and the people in general.

But if it wasn’t for the fact English is the language over there, the United Stes of America would feel much more foreign to us that France or Germany or Denmark etc.

Agreed. Having worked all over the globe I feel I have a lot more in common with Europeans than Americans (language and my love of American cars apart)

Yep. We play sport with Europe, we go to war with America.

And the Ryder Cup allows us to combine the two every few years.
