I struggle to answer this because it's common sense.

Not meaning to be condescending but struggling to come up with an answer that isn't...

You can't seriously believe that a nation state having immigration procedure for non-nationals is racist by definition?

It's a legal definition, that you cannot discriminate against someone on the basis of their nationality. We pretend it's okay to do it because it's always been done, but the idea that someone is less trustworthy because they're French or American or Polish is absurd.

You say it's common sense, yet we have a few decades worth of evidence of not doing as you say within the EU, so you would think the weight of evidence would overwhelm your common sense, but as this thread has shown, people don't tend to use evidence to update their opinions all that often.

Free Movement within the EU = not checked - as I stated why is not common sense to check up on people we welcome to our country ?

That's fantastical nonsense though. Even the EU is protectionist of its' own borders. You are describing a utopian world order of no government and free movement with presumably one central bureaucracy.

That's absurd. It's not about trustworthiness - it's about order and control for the common good.

You may not have seen it Bruce but I added a bit at the bottom of my post about Equality Act definition.

Indeed:

"However, the act also offers protection beyond the EU directives, protecting against discrimination based on a person's nationality and citizenship[4][5] and also extending individuals' rights in areas of life beyond the workplace in religion or belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and gender reassignment. "

Show the evidence then Joe. Has allowing people to travel unhindered from Germany to France had any kind of negative impact?

Order and control  ffs. So you're not using any actual evidence from an extensive open borders experiment, and are tossing out silly phrases like order and control. Fair enough. And for the record (although this shouldn't be news to anyone on here), yes, I advocate open borders, as I regard the ability to live and work wherever you please a fundamental human right.

Bruce on occasions and the % is low - we have unfortunately let in criminals and murderers who have committed those crimes - when a simple check up should have stopped them entering our country that's not racist Bruce its common sense......

And yet the likes of Citizens Advice, and numerous other groups with a clear interest in racism, clearly include nationality in their definition of the term.

Yes but the Equality Act makes allowance for discrimination in certain circumstances, immigration being one of them.

Schedule 3 of the Equality Act 2010 includes provisions allowing discrimination in the area of
immigration.

There are three types of discrimination, which Schedule 3 permits in certain circumstances –disability, race and religious belief. So a Government Minister, carrying out an immigration function, can treat someone differently and less favourably by reason of their nationality, ethnicity or national origins. It also allows Government authorisation of the UK Border Agency to act in the same way.

the world is not an open border world though is it...

why should the UK have open borders to all??

I can apply for work visa's in many different countries and will be accepted if that particular country believes I am bringing something worth having that contributes to the economy.. if this were not the case countries would just turn into cess pits

Why would they turn into cess pits? Where's your evidence?

*sigh. I'll ask again Joe, and do please provide some evidence as that is what I'm asking for. Do you have any evidence that there being no checks on people travelling between France and Germany has had any negative effect on crime in those countries?

For sure, but I don't think it's either right or effective. We live in an age of supposedly evidence-based policy making, and have clear evidence from allowing the free movement of people versus government control over the movement of people, yet people are ignoring that evidence so they can play dog whistle nationalism.

I can see how allowing you to move elsewhere runs the risk of turning that place into a cess pit Frank, but thank you for your contribution of stating the obvious.
