I do get it joe but it’s a bit meaningless and mostly irrelevant to much of the debate we’re having . The Republic Are and would always be a special case and have been treated as such , rightly so . I’m not sure any of that deals with the problems we keep raising other than exacerbating them .

The Island of Ireland will continue to be the biggest issue with this whole debate and to be frank vague lines about technology or future intentions just doesn’t deal with it.

I’m rapidly moving towards the idea that this Brexit vote to preserve our national identity is going to lead to the break up of the U.K. as we know it and that just seems insane .

(Also in my earlier post about Id cards I obviously meant they’d cost billions and not millions but I missed the edit deadline )
So let's get this correct people if Irish status can move freely in Ireland, and the UK (quite rightly) with the EU and Brexit, yet goods can't ?......that's a crazy anomaly by the EU it's been a smokescreen all the time to mess Brexit up, and it's worked for the EU ....
More fool May for falling for it and our overpaid top civil servants who obviously do not look at history.......
As I stated goods pass over the borders with different income tax, customs and different Vat rates also different currencies yet the EU deliberately made it a spanner in the works - and oh they forgot about Spain and Gilbralter where there is still an eternity ongoing grievances been going on for eternity ......
It's such a mess.....that's why the deal will rightly be rejected by remainers and brexiteers in the HOC !

"The UK envisages using inland controls, through the access to labour markets and social security, to enforce immigration policy without requiring checks on people crossing the Irish border. "

This basically sounds like UK the immigration policy post-Brexit amounts to identifying illegal immigrants when they apply for a National Insurance number or sign on the dole. Its pie in the sky stuff.

You keep your nose out get on the other forumlol

Have you thought about putting your name down for the audience on Question Time Joey ?

I`d organise a forum whip round to pay for your expenses, so we could all witness the truly " unique " experience of you questioning the panel.

It would go down in television folklore lol

TBF that is where the mistake was made by May and the negotiating team - they should have gone in with an offer of freedom of movement as initially expressed in the Treaty of Rome (ie: for workers, their families and people offered a job but noone else) and said that it would apply equally to all EU citizens, but that this would replace the CTA. Then they could have watched Varadkar try to defend an agreement that would be needless, which makes a mockery of the 27 being treated equally and which the Republic doesnt uphold anyway.

Not sure what you mean by this. UK citizens are free to live in the Republic if they want to and always have been.

I meant the border between the UK and Eire in Eire, which (at ports of entry at least) still has passport control and which they can still refuse you entry at if you cannot prove you are British.

But the main point was to make it clear that if Brexit happens the Republic can either be part of the CTA or it can be part of the EU; they cannot have both (indeed from a pro-EU standpoint it would be perverse to treat them differently than the other 26).

There are passport controls at points of entry to the State the same as there are in every other EU country. Anyone with a vaild EU passport is allowed to enter. People who aren't EU citizens have join a separate queue where they are presumably required to provide further documentation. I am aware that Irish citizens entering the UK don't have to go through passport control, but just because the UK has a different process doesn't mean that Ireland doesn't uphold the CTA as you suggested.

As to your wider point, after Brexit the CTA arrangement between the UK and Ireland will continue despite the fact you are leaving the EU. There is no reason why it shouldn't; both governments are happy with it and the EU don't mind either. The less barriers between people the better.
