Women in Merseyside are 'taking to the red light district for the first time' because of Universal Credit , the government has been told.

Birkenhead MP Frank Field has written to Work and Pensions secretary Esther McVey to inform her that women in his constituency have been forced into sex work because the government's new welfare system is pushing them towards poverty.

Speaking in the House of Commons today, Ms McVey said she would not meet with the Merseyside women affected and added that “there are now record job opportunities” in the UK.

Mr Field said he wrote to the Liverpool-born welfare chief to raise his concerns after charities in his area - as well as the local police force - have become increasingly concerned about the impact Universal Credit is having

How is advising a person that is purportedly turning to prostitution to get a job bad advice? Do you think that this person is better off being told to carry on working as a prostitute?

id say any lady prepared to go out and do that sort of thing may be in need of some mental health care at the very least, not be forced into working at the local aldi.

the people having to resort to this are the ones that have been forced off the benefits systems due to austerity cuts.

The sex industry is full of perfectly sane women that do it for an array of reasons.

If this unknown woman does have mental health conditions that prevent her from working, then she should apply for the correct benefit, and if she was then denied the correct benefit, then I would absolutely agree that it would be disgraceful. But this isn't what is being reported.

But if she is capable of work, then the best advice she could possibly receive is to go and get a job.

I'm doubtful of the whole 'the government are forcing people into prostitution' narrative. There will be plenty of other people in similar circumstances to this person, and they aren't all being 'forced' into prostitution. We aren't living in Thailand man.

Yes, there is a problem with the UC system. It is this delay in receiving payments that is the disgrace, and if it is by design then it is even more disgraceful. But I don't think telling someone to look for a job is disgraceful at all. If she is capable of work, then it is literally the best advice that she is going to get.

I can see what you`re getting at Frank, but I think this is an extreme example tbh.

Many more people who`ve fallen foul of UC end up at food banks, pay day loan companies and loan sharks, trapped in a cycle of debt that they can never get out of or even losing the places they live in.

So? We wont be in the EU, so all is good then.
No actually a moderate Tory was on the channel 4 news tonight stated he had written to her on how to unite the country- we leave on the agreed date March next year - forget the implementation business negotiation the Norway option for two years only fixed term - then we would be in the single market - customs union on cheaper subscriptions, and put the EU on the back foot by then carrying on with the same negotiations to solve the rest of the trade problems a Canada plus deal and the solutions of the Irish border - that way businesses would know where they were in the two years warning the EU it's either a bespoke good trade deal or WTO rules inside those two years it's a firmer footing as she is dithering on ATM.........

...
I don't see why they would be that rattled to be honest. The UK will still buy stuff from the EU but will get charged more which in turn hands more money into the pot, anything we make that they really want on the cheap can then be set up in the common market area with EU enterprise subsidies. That too = more money and less unemployment for the members of the EU.

Sure they would like us in the EU as another voice and it helps the situation in Ireland immensely but at the end of the day I'm sure they will do ok.

The problem is some people have a very over inflated sense of worth regarding who the UK is and the benefits it brings to the world.

I think you may be missing the point. They sell more to us than we do to them. If we put duty on imports, then the tax raised by the U.K. will be more than the tax raised by the EU, therefore the U.K. benefits. Of course we will continue to trade, but to our financial advantage......We will be the EU’s largest customer in the world.....
