some nice diversionary tactics here... look... the banking crisis

Don't let the truth get in the way of a good 'Remain' argument, eh, Ruairi...?

Fact is, that banking 'crisis' in the mid-2000s was enormous in its impact on ordinary people. Yet it seems people like you are prepared to simply dismiss it now...

Not at all, and I wasn't happy about the troika in Ireland and am still not happy about the outcome of the banking crisis.
I'm also not happy about the financial implications of Brexit.

To be fair, the original response probably told you all you needed to know, albeit perhaps about the sender than the recipient.

Now, now, no need to get personal. Particularly so from a Mod...

Have you listened to what they guy said (or read the translation)?

Nah.

Thought it was good piece though, if a bit rhetoric rich.

It just seemd to be the same old compilation of words, roydo, viz, isn't the EU wonderful and it is the only place to be going forward, and we will forever regret leaving, blah, blah, blah. It's what we have all heard from 24th June 2016 onwards, and it really has become tiresome. I really do wait for the whole world to cave in on us in April next year...

Yeah, the same sort of claptrap that enough believed from Farage et al.

Different side of the same coin.

It was a poor response, and sadly in keeping with the general lassez faire attitude towards leaving. It'll be fine, all attempts to actually analyse it and think about it are nonsense, we should just believe. The rise of the EU has magically coincided with the longest period of peace in Europe since the Romans. Maybe that's 'bollox' to you, but it's not for many.

Regarding 'the world caving in' comment. It's simplistic twaddle. You're an ardent amateur military historian. Do wars happen in a snapshot or bubble under for years before they snap into conflict? You will no doubt argue that Brexit does nothing of the sort, but the very language used to justify it betrays that. We'll be looking after ourselves, in charge of our own destiny, taking back control. It's all 'us, us, us' and framing things as though we'll be much better off not shackled to Jonny Foreigner. If you can't see how that's flicking a v at the continent then I don't know.

No Bruce, the longest period of peace in Europe has coincided with the USA, UK and France having nuclear weapons. And yes it is all us, us, us, just like every other country in the EU, the difference being that we have the balls to leave and do something else......

Poor response, from me? None of the sort!

The post-war peace in Europe came about through the 'Cold War' stand-off between the USA and the Soviet Union. The EU had NOTHING to do with that, and well you know it (or should). The EU didn't exist for decades. So yes, it is 'bollox', Bruce. And if you think peace in what we now term Europe came with the fall of the Roman Empire, all I will say is that you need to re-visit 'European' history...

The caving in comment. Haven't you been reading this thread since June 2016? That has been the theme from those who voted Remain constantly, right through the many months of this thread's existence.

You may say I am an ardent 'amateur' military historian, but an 'amateur' approach at any time would have brought about nothing (and you know what I am talking about here, Bruce). But I don't mind being classed as 'amateur' in that respect; I'm an amateur guitarist as well. No sweat with being classed as amateur with regard to either. To compare wars with Brexit, is well, just not logical at all; you are not comparing llike with like. I believe your phrase 'shackled to Johnny Foreigner' is an unfortunate choice of words...

Let me pose some questions to you, Bruce:
Post-Brexit:
Will we continue to trade with the EU?
Will we continue to trade with the rest of the world?
Will Parliament continue to function?
Will the British judiciary continue to function?
Will there still be travel between Britain and the EU?
Wiill there still be travel between Britain and the rest of the world?

As for your last two sentences, does your comment mean that the rest of the world flicks a 'v' at the EU every second of every day? Of course not, and it also does not mean we are flicking a 'v' at the EU now, nor in the future. You have read (I expect) the reasons advanced for leaving on many occasions in this thread, so I am not going to repeat them again. In the film Gettysberg there is a scene where Confederate geneals talk one night about leaving the United States of America. One of them likens it to a 'club', whereby anyone is free to leave at any time, and puts the secession of the thirteen southern states on the same footing, i.e. that they were free to leave the Union if they so wished. One might see the decision to leave the EU in the same way - that if it is the will of the people, then we leave. On the other hand, one may not accept that contention. Either way, we are Confederates to your Yankees! ;)
