The Irish border will not stop Brexit. As much as you may like to think it will, it won’t happen.......

Teresa will do a deal with the EU to keep NI in the customs union would be my best guess. I'll always lean unionist albeit dont vote for any party here. But its ironic that something (ie brexit) which should reinforce the position and legitimacy of Northern Ireland as a state, and the unionist position, could well turn out to be the thing that puts the nail in its coffin. Unionists might say that staying in the customs union is not going to happen, and think that the tories are their natural allies. But the tories have ditched them before and stabbed them in the front nevermind the back.

My Granda is still fuming at Maggie now about beung sold out by the 85 Anglo Irish Agreement lol

I have always felt that the issue of Brexit could be a disaster for unionism. I say this as someone who class themselves as a unionist. Why the DUP and the majority of unionists voted for Brexit is beyond me. It was obvious that a leave vote would bring about this problem with the Irish border. Previously with us in the EU the border wasnt an issue and many would be nationalists were pretty apathetic to the whole political set up, this suited unionism just fine. Not any more the prospect of a border is a the shot in the at that nationalism needed. Once the DUP are no longer needed to prop up a westminster government the future of Northern Ireland is weaker than it ever has been.

If NI leaves the common market there’ll be a raft of law suits pertaining to the GFA. If NI stays in the common market there’ll be a raft of law suits from the Scots demanding equal treatment to NI.
Either way, this has a lonnng way to go.

Yeah I'd agree with all that. But nothing will change my mind that the European union is an undemocratic organisation which hurts our manufacturing and our agriculture and is a gravy train for beauracrats. We'v basically paid them 40 billion so we can chat. Like what other organisation in the world forces members to pay a large fee before you can even discuss leaving. It's a sham.

Hang on. The "divorce bill" is simply based on commitments the UK made whilst a member of the "club".

If you, me, Pete and Joey set up a business together and make various decisions along the way over a period of decades. If Pete then announces he's off and leaving the business the remaining three of us would sit down and work out what he's left us to deal with. Ultimately we'd say fine off you go mate but make sure you pay your dues and don't leave us out of pocket.

We'll agree to disagree then Pete. I just think that Brexit is fundamentally at odds with the Good Friday Agreement as the Republic of Ireland is an integral part of the EU that Boris, Nigel and Rees-Mogg want to detach away from. You just can't square that circle in my opinion.

As another poster has just said Brexit will be tied down in legal cases whichever way the Irish border issue is decided.

Very interesting problem indeed, as someone studied Political Science, it strikes me how much of a trouble May is in. This border problem is completely crazy, very complicated and has various factors.

If I was someone carrying British passport, I wouldn't vote for Brexit but still I can understand why majority of the population wanted out. Reasons are most probably stated on this thread. I just want to state that I really feel bad for PM May, she is not among my fave politicians by any means but she is in a big trouble about decision making and bravo to her for still trying her best (it seems from a far)

It’s a mess of her own making, she screwed up when she called the GE. She screwed up when she went into power with the DUP, she’s continuously screwing up by promising everything to everyone.

How was fish traded off. You do know what has been agreed don’t you......

Douglas Ross, the Tory MP for Moray, said: “There is no spinning this as a good outcome. It would be easier to get someone to drink a pint of sick than try to sell this as a success.”

Oh dear, no Partisan spin from Scotland.

James O'brien on LBC was upset this am that talks are progressing positively with the EU - music to my ears to shut this remain protagonist up! lollollollollollollollol

I’m sure there will be difficulties but there will also have to be compromises. The difficulties mostly seem to be getting generated by the ROI who are enjoying the limelight amongst the 27. However when push comes to shove and a deal is either a sensible one, with minor compromises, or a hard Brexit with all the disadvantages this will give to ROI then a deal will be done.....the negotiations are proceeding, we legally leave the EU next year and formally leave by the end of the following year.....the wheels are turning.....
