I think they may have given up on that idea judging by May's output vs what's pending.
Rationally I'd love to believe that, but a whole bunch of folk still think the Brexit talks are going well.

..so being part of a Cutoms Union means the U.K. won’t be able to negotiate bespoke deals with markets outside Europe. What I don’t understand is the assumption that our own deals will be superior to those negotiated by the Customs Union. I listened to a major Asian businessman saying his country would be more inclined to want better deals with Europe than the U.K. in isolation.
The Tory manifesto said that we were leaving the EU, it said we would not be part of the single market, it said we would not be part of a customs union.....pages 38-39......

Wasn't there a poll last week where 60pc thought they were going very poorly, and only 20pc satisfied?Rationally I'd love to believe that, but a whole bunch of folk still think the Brexit talks are going well.

Her constituency voters will oust her they voted out in the referendum- after it she gave an interview as an avid remainer saying she was going to listen to. Her voters in future?..................And Soubry told her Broxtowe constituents that she would vote to keep the Single Market and Customs Union. She could not have been clearer so when the likes of @Joey66 call her a witch and demand her de-selection they are ignoring the facts. She could not have been more open and honest. If all MPs had her integrity then we'd be in a lot better place. Her belief, and one I share, is that leaving the CU and SM is inconsistent with the wider aims of the Tory manifesto to enrich the lives of the UK people.

She's a witch who will fall on her sword the most undesirable Tory that makes you want to turn the sound down even before Brexit!Joey she is doing now exactly what she said she would do before the general election. She has always been very clear that she supported the customs union and single market. With that knowledge the local voters returned her to parliament as their MP to represent them. Exactly what bit of that don't you get? I'd actually agree with you had Soubry been silent before the general election and kept her views to herself but that couldn't be further from the truth.

You obviously never heard her speech the day after the referendum two faced cow!
Possibly, I don't know tbh. I've seen a few polls showing that precious few people (on either side) have changed their minds over the last 18 months, which I find a bit baffling given how much more information we now have, both on the implications of Brexit and the government's strategy for it. We've seen on this thread how little ground has been ceded, with neither Joe, Pete et al thinking it's a turkey or you, I or any other 'remainer' thinking this is actually going better than expected.
Soubry said she would honour the referendum vote and give her backing to triggering Article 50. She also said she would push for a full customs union and membership of the single market.
She has been entirely true to her word and her voters backed her in the recent general election. But somehow you know better?
As for making such comments on the basis of her voice - really? There are many of us who find the likes of Gove, Boris, Rees Mogg, Hoey and Angela Ledstrom - not to mention Farage and Galloway - utterly repulsive in every shape and form but it hardly constitutes a reasoned debate does it?
Soubry will push it, but will fall into line if there is a confidence vote. She may well believe that the U.K. is better in the EU, but there is no way she could be convinced that Jeremy Corbyn should be PM.......
Agreed. I do struggle with the idea that anyone ever thought these talks would be a positive experience. The UK leaving the EU causes them problems in the short-term (budget issues) and long-term (to open the door to other countries to leave) not to mention the huge harm it will cause one of their members (Ireland). The EU were never going to make this an easy ride.
Ah, the Tory argument of May 1940 - "the alternative is worse, they'll swallow anything if its a confidence issue". Like 1940 this is a vote that it would be in the country's interest for them to lose.
