There is nothing to stop the U.K. allowing people from Southern Ireland access to a common travel area yet denying it to other nationals.....

But everyone in the EU has an EU passport. So exactly how? Ones with an Irish accents get wived through, but anyone else is stopped and turned back?

I can see one or two problems with that.....

How? If the border is open how can they stop anyone? The idea of an open border means just that no guards or agents of the state protecting it or asking for passports.

You are essentially asking the southern part of Ireland to be your border patrol when citizens land at an Irish port.

They have to do it anyway........

How to Stop Brexit (by Nick Clegg) is an Amazon best seller atm...

Make of that what you will.

Fully expect an ad hominem attack on Clegg as a response.

This is my point , the common travel area allows free movement so you can't have that for specific identified individuals without rewriting the legislation. Then you have to have UKBA staff checking those that travel to ensure they comply and then it isn't a common travel area , can you see what I mean ? Also you're going to , obviously , have every EU citizen entitled to live in the republic . So under your system once they do they can travel , so how long ? One day , two ? How do ukba check that ? It's a logistical nightmare , in not trying to be obtuse by the way .

Haha!! Hilarious.

No, they have to check their visas and passports to enter Southern Ireland. They don't have to ask them nor do they ever really ask. Have you ever been through Ireland's passport control as an EU citizen? The glance at your EU passport and tell you to move on.

Realistically then you are talking about non EU citizens. They are the only ones asked anything at any Border in any EU country. Especially Ireland. Even then defendant on where you came from they don't quiz you i know because my wife is non EU and it never takes that long.

Even then i would suspect anyone up to no good not to say they are going to travel up north knowing that would possibly lead to further questions.

The Irish government are not going to insist on their people doing extra work for the UK. Like i said many times before it's your issue not ours.

So you’re saying there’s absolutely no way of doing it......
That's about the size of it Pete yes, that's exactly what I'm saying

As there would be no practical way of refunding the value of an individual companies tariff payments without making it an obvious Govt subsidy.

Reducing corporation tax or other assorted tax breaks would be universal and would not directly compensate those affected for the cost incurred.

It's a noddy notion, back of a cig packet stuff Pete - much like the rest of Brexit tbh.
